Weekly Update 2.19.15 (Heroic Strike)

Published on: Feb 19, 2015 @ 16:38

When the bits from 1.1.1 stream into your drive, we’ll be (finally) fixing a heavy ammo bug, applying some newfound balance to the weapon sandbox, and enhancing the view into your ever-growing reputation.

Move to Strike!

As part of 1.1.1, we’re changing the Weekly Heroic Strike to be a matchmade activity.

Why? Let’s ask Design Lead M.E. Chung.

M.E. We wanted the Weekly Heroics to be a challenge that pushed you and your buddies, but what we observed was that these strikes don’t demand the same cooperation of a cohesive pre-made group.

The overwhelming community response was such that many players didn’t have the numbers on their friends list to experience the activity on a weekly basis.

Can I still solo the Weekly Heroic?

M.E. No, this change applies to all levels of the Weekly Heroic.

What about the Nightfall?

M.E. No change. Since players are kicked to Orbit on team wipe, we want people to be able to preserve that group so they could give it another go.

So, no matchmaking for Raids neither?

M.E. No, but we are keenly aware of the issue. We think good Raid sessions rely on groups of communicative players who are invested in each other, but we know that it’s challenging for many players to find groups for Raids and Nightfall today.

We are thinking hard about how we can help make that an easier experience in future releases.

Beyond this update, we’ll talk more about M.E.’s team and how they work. Supporting a live game like Destiny is a job that’s never finished, and they have plans for the update that will follow 1.1.1 that I think you might find exciting.

Bullet Time

Here are some of the other things you’ll enjoy when we deliver fresh bullet points to the Updates blog:

  • Xûr will stop forgetting to bring his Exotic engrams when he visits us from… wherever Xûr is from.
  • Iron Banner will work as previously promised, with a greater variety of maps in rotation as well as a couple of new Bounties that give you more control over which weapon you can use to complete them – and we were hoping that one would have arrived before the current event.
  • Strikes and Crucible Maps will be less likely to repeat themselves when you stay in a matchmaking playlist with your Fireteam.
  • Grimoire Cards will drop when you expect them to.

There’s also some other stuff that we’ll detail out for you once we’re go for launch. Soon.

Check out forums.planetdestiny.com if you'd like to talk to others about Destiny in a friendly and welcoming community! :)

I feel like destinylfg.net has proven that you don’t need pre-formed groups to do raids. I personally have done my fair share of both normal and hard VOG/Crota and I’ve only done it through destinylfg.net. I simply do not have 5 other buddies that can get together once a week to do this. I’m sure I’m not the only one. I feel like matchmaking in raids will work fine as long as everyone has a mic.

    • Kenshiro Genjuro

Every raid I’ve done is almost entirely with complete strangers. Having an established group would be better if course, but sometimes you just have to get people doing them in the first place.

    • insanetrasher

That is because players using a website to find fireteams are by definition subject to be dedicated players. That makes a Huge difference. Trust me you’ll change your mind when matchmaking will be made available, because it probably will someday.

Casuals that don’t have a clue about what to do in a Raid will simply have to press “confirm” to enter it and you’ll have a chance to be matched with them.

    • WSquared88

The issue that Bungie is trying to convey is that you need to communicate with other people to do the raid. When someone goes to destinylfg.net then they are clearly showing that they want to communicate with other people to do the raid. If you just have normal random matchmaking then you will run into several people that won’t want to communicate because they don’t think they need to. By having destinylfg.net people have to do a little extra work to get what they want which most of the time eliminates the people that aren’t willing to communicate when doing the raid.

    • Happy Gamer

Yeah while I agree with you and I used it many many times, I find it a bit redundant. I mean why not just a match making system? Sure you can “customize” who you invite via LFG, but this is so doable in game. It HAS been done in game from many many old online games 10+ years ago.

For me it’s not even the fact you need match making or not. I am just astonished by the archaic game design choices they are making.

    • mattyice

I think the main issue is that there is no in-game way to find groups besides getting lucky at the tower and randomly messaging/inviting someone. A message board in the tower or a beacon above your head or a room in the tower to find people would work better than a separate website in my opinion

  • UndeadMeatHead

When I raid, it’s with a friend and a bunch of random people we find in the tower. What the hell is the difference between that and match making? Or maybe making it an option to do match making on a raid, in case you don’t want to do it with six people, and don’t want someone random joining your match.

    • insanetrasher

Ok for comparing to randoms in the tower, but not with players found on lfg websites.

    • Jesper Raundahl

Let me ask you. Do you pick the people who join yourself?

  • “What about the Nightfall? M.E. No change. Since players are kicked to Orbit on team wipe, we want people to be able to preserve that group so they could give it another go.”

That’s not our fault. Fix your game! You force a restart on nightfall when people die but you keep save points for raids on hard! How is this even fair to players?

    • insanetrasher

My only complain with nightfall is the fact that it should at least restart from begining instead of being kicked to orbit, and inconsistent rewards.

      • dstripedape

Restarting nf from the beginning would solve the problem while also saving server cpu cycles

  • Kenshiro Genjuro

They should just have chat open at the bars in the tower and automatically have guys on your friends list happen to pop up. It would facilitate randomly coordinating raids with friends and strangers alike.

    • WSquared88

Currently Destiny is designed so that if you have a friend in the Tower the game will automatically try to put you into their instance of the Tower. This will only happen if they have their privacy setting set to friends only (on by default) and if their instance of the Tower isn’t full.

      • Kenshiro Genjuro

Then I guess the problem is the tower is usually kept full? I never see friends randomly pop up. Maybe they should set it to run nominally at a few under so there’s always headroom when a friend comes online.

        • WSquared88

That becomes a problem where Bungie would have to buy way more servers then they would need. It’s a weird issue that they have to work around.

  • DerultimativeOzzy

They should bring people to restart nightfalls without getting into orbit. I feel punished to redo a loading screen everytime I’ll fail.
Also should Strange Coins and Ascending material not be single rewards but bonus rewards on top of armour, weapons and engrams. I mean you already have a strike that gives SC’s. That decreases the fun when it happens and decreases the value when you get like 20 strange coins from two strikes. Atleast in my point of view and opinion. :/

    • hauntedknight55

“I feel punished to redo a loading screen everytime I’ll fail.”
That’s the difference and challenge of the Nightfall. It is supposed to be frustrating. It’s the reason it rewards potential exotics and such.

  • Adamms

These seem like great updates. None of them are BOOM LOOK EVERYONE GETS AN EXOTIC FOR FREE, but they are much needed additions and updates. Good job Bungie, keep it up.

  • WSquared88

These updates are definitely nice, but what took so long?

  • insanetrasher

So, they teased us for… weekly matchmaking.. thats a bit disapointing since most of the time you do the weekly with the same fireteam you did the nightfall with. So still nothing for dedicated players. But a progress in destiny overall, so thats a good thing.

  • Charles LeMaire

they should have left the weekly so you could solo if you wanted too.. thanks bungie…

  • Wolf

This is crap, this is the last straw, they are messing up destiny. I enjoy playing with people in Pvp. I also did strike missions.

I have a level 31 warlock and level 31 hunter and I have not done one raid. Used all those websites for 3 months and still have not done a raid. Scheduled events and people flake out at the last moment.

They need to have match making for raids or allow you to do it solo.

They screwed up the weekly strike that was one of the few times, I was able to play solo.

    • dstripedape

Sorry to be a dick, but if you have not done the raids yet while using the website it’s your fault. I would not mind matchmaking in raids but the website makes finding a team doable if you put in the effort

      • ghost2349

you are wrong and you are a dick

        • dstripedape

If you really want to try the raid you would have found a group. Last night at 2 am i found a group for crota in 10 minutes, your response shows why no one plays with you

        • Wolf

Ghost you are wrong, Finally got a team this week end will raid

    • Jesper Raundahl

With destinylfg.com I find raids within 5 minutes if I don’t do it monday evening.

So if you can’t find a group, you’re doing something wrong.

I don’t even write anything remotely unique.

“Experienced, Have Mic, Maxed Weapons”. gets me groups to normal Crota as any lvl 31 class (have one of each)

      • dstripedape

Exactly, weekends are full folks looking for teams. Sounds like hateration just for the hell of it

  • Charles

Bring back my heavy ammo synthesis!

  • Happy Gamer

Not sure why this was so difficult to being with. Why not just add the option to solo weekly/nightfall hell even Vanguard strikes? OPTIONS…I used to not think much of anything about Destiny and it’s design choice, but after having quit for almost a month (rather just not playing unless friend needs help with NF or something) logging in total 2-3 times in the period, made me think. Is it business etc. for keeping game afloat longer? Or is it, Bungie is just really bad at making games (this option I don’t really wish upon it). Then again I feel games have been very lackluster for this generation to begin with. I don’t know what’s going on.

  • Jesper Raundahl

What I really wanted was an ingame “LFG for….” mode, so my 30-40+ on my friendslist can I see I am interested in doing said activity, and I can group up with them instead of randoms.

  • Cupid Stunt

Honestly, Bungie must really hate the soloists, otherwise they would just offer a choice of joining a matchmake or going solo, whereas the one thing they should offer matchmaking for, the Raids, they continue to deny everybody, locking away the best loot from those who don’t have a large friend base, or simply don’t have the time or inclination to search outside of Destiny, and why should they have to?!. Personally this gives me just another reason to stop regularly doing another weekly activity within destiny, I don’t need coins, I have over 100 and counting in my vault, like so many others do, and I regularly get the same amount of coins from the nightfall as from the weekly heroic, despite the extra difficulty. Also, Xur is basically a bastard now so strange coins aren’t that coveted or valuable anymore.

  • Quattro Bageena

Great, now we get to deal with afk’ers on the weekly strikes too.

  • ceedoubleyou

Arrrgh. No more soloing the weekly heroic?

Why doe Bungie seem to think that we want LESS control over what we can do in Destiny? So what’s left now for solo players? Bounties? Re-doing old missions? How long till Bungie decides that even those must be done with mandatory assigned teammates?

To me, this is yet another in Bungie’s long established habit of stripping away various parts of the game to make/require that solo players play the game in the exact way Bungie demands it be played.

“You WILL play with other people,” Bungie seems to be telling us. “Strangers if need be. No deviation is tolerated.”

Stop contracting the game, Bungie. Expand it.

  • SerG

im an adult who works from 2-10 pm. matchmaking for weeklies is awesome! Especially wince 99% of the peeps on my friends list r offline when i get off work. i had only just begun using Destinylfg which worked for me the few times i used it. Matchmaking is more convenient however. I share the pain many feel when they r not able to solo weeklies qne have no available bues to help. a step in the right direction in my opinion. matchmakiny for the raids would b a nightmare. Especially when some stranger only needs radiant shards to level up jumps ship after the first checkpoint or the kid who after a half hour yells that the raid is taking too long and quits. The raid should stay the way it is.

  • Cloud

That’s all well and good, but… When is the update coming out exactly?

  • Dustin Laird

The heavy patch is all that matters. Just happy for that.
