Voice Chat Beta – Nov 18

Players of Destiny have been asking to speak to the players they meet through Matchmaking. Even if your teammates have not been able to hear you, we have at Bungie. With development complete on a new social feature, we’re delivering a solution that will bring Guardians closer together.

To protect the immersive experience of exploring the wild, our philosophies for in-game chat still rely heavily on the notion of consent.

“We believe that requiring players to opt-in to chat leads to more friendly environments,” says Bungie Design Lead M.E. Chung.

Opt-in Voice Channels

As part of Destiny Update 1.0.3, scheduled for deployment on November 18th, you will have access to two options for talking to the Guardians with whom you fight.

Fireteam Chat

Since launch, you’ve been able to use Fireteam Chat to speak to the Guardians included in your pre-formed party. This includes players who join you in orbit before you begin an activity together. Fireteam Chat is signified by the speaker icon.

Team Chat

After the update, you’ll be able to join a new channel that will provide for Team Chat. This will include the players you meet via Matchmaking, as well as members of your Fireteam who make the same selection. This option will be available in any matchmade activity – including Strikes and in team-based Crucible matches. Team Chat is signified by the megaphone icon.

Team Chat Availability

Upon landing in an activity where opt-in voice is enabled, you’ll receive a notification that says Team voice chat now available. Look to the lower left of your screen for the prompt.

When a player accesses the channel, you’ll see a prompt that says [Player] has entered the Team voice channel. That’s your invitation to join them.

Joining Team Chat

If Team Chat is available, it can be accessed at any point in time by going into Navigation Mode in Destiny. As always, you activate that menu by deploying your Ghost.

Once in Navigation Mode, you will see the user interface for channel selection. The lower right of your screen will contain the following:

  • Directional button icons
  • Highlights for available chat options
  • Text for current channel
  • Icons for current channel

To deactivate the public option and retreat to a more private corner with friends who have joined your Fireteam, just revert back to Fireteam Chat using the same Navigation Mode menu. At any time, the channel you’re using will be displayed in the lower right. You can always toggle between channels using the highlighted directional buttons.

Team Chat Errors

If voice options are unavailable, it could be that you’re connected to a party chat service tied to your console. To benefit from the new Team Chat voice feature, you’ll need to be using the Destiny game channel. A player using a platform-specific channel will see a different prompt in the lower right of the user interface. You may also be blocked from using Team Chat if your networking settings are not properly configured.

Voice Chat Settings

As with everything in Destiny, your Settings menu will enable you to establish your preferences. You will have two options under VOICE. Choose the one that best suits your style of play.

Manually Opt-in (Default)

This is the default option. When playing a game, you will need to deliberately enter Navigation Mode to select Team Chat. Each member of a pre-formed party must select this option on their own.

Automatic Opt-in When Solo

With this option, you’ll be automatically added to the Team Chat channel when you’re alone. The automated toggle will not happen if you’re keeping the company of a friend in your Fireteam. That would separate you from them, and no one likes to be separated from their friends.

Talking to Strangers

The roll-out of this new feature is a chance for us to collect feedback on its functionality. Please share with us your experiences. The Bungie.net forum is always open to your thoughts, reports, and opinions.

Of course, Bungie cannot guarantee the quality of the teammates we’ll match you with in Destiny. If that were the case, none of these filters would be necessary! In the event that you encounter a player who is toxic to your experience, simply revert back to Fireteam Chat or use your console-specific interface to Mute or Report them.

It is our hope that this new feature exposes you to people who will enhance your experience. Destiny was envisioned as a game that will bring players together for surprise encounters. With the right options in play, those moments can lead to friendships and alliances that will serve you for years to come!

    Okay Bungie, it’s obvious that you guys have a working module of the new chat system, based on the pictures in this article it already works. . .So why do we who love Destiny have to wait another five (+) days to ultilize it? ? ?

    I really like this. This game is all about online and very ilmportant to communicate with players. As we have prove it with the raids. Without communicate, it’s pretty much f*cked up. So yes i’m happy that we can communicate in Crucible too so everybody don’t run like headless chicken or try to be pro and die when there is you vs two enemies. This game is just not run and kill everything. And yes when players know what to do then you don’t have to communicate, and that’s true in Vanguard Strikes, they are easy and simple Strikes. But it’s more entertaining when you can communicate and maybe throw some jokes or cheer each others, it makes the game more fun and enjoyable! Much appreciate if you had time to read this!

    • They would need to be in your Fireteam, or in your team chat channel

        Damn, so no return to the Beta’s system where people in the Tower could talk to each other?

  • How do i mute single players in PvP? Do i have to cut all communication when one douchbag is in my team? “Consol specific interface”? Never saw something like this on my PS4.

      it’ll still be the D-Pad, dude…. you know the one on the upper left side of your controller?

      And wow, the PS4 controller is a oddball now… give me a 360 or One controller anyday….

        With the D-Pad i can switch off/on the hole Channel, meaning all players or nobody. But sometimes you need to mute only one butthurt kid.

          you have to physically mute them like you would if they joined your actual fireteam

    shouldent something like this have been included at launch? this game was betatested, so shouldent they have relized from halo that people like to talk to eachother?

      I think they realized from halo that people don’t like to talk to eachother… lol. I’ve only ever heard people moan about “Squeakers” and “Mouth Breathers” in game chat. I’ve never heard a single useful thing said in game chat in my whole time of playing. I’m glad it is defaultly mute. You may have a different experience, but I for one am tired of muting every person in my game.

        i do agree, but them acting like talking in game is a big thing just shows how little this game was tested

          They always knew talking in this game was big, they never said or even showed it wasn’t. The fact that a near useless component like “Public Channels” wasn’t introduced immediately just shows common sense. I’ve been gaming all my life, I was on XBOX live the moment it came out, I would not be exaggerating at all to say I have NEVER heard any randomer say anything useful, ever. It has always been more annoying than useful in any instance. I’m so glad It wasn’t in the game and still isn’t by default. It’s so much easier to concentrate and enjoy the game when you don’t have assholes of all ages being annoying as hell by shouting or screaming down the Mic and then leading me to have to interrupt my own game to individually mute all of them or join an empty party. If you want to communicate with people then join a party and play with friends. Communication was never taken away, just communication with many obnoxious individuals was negated; which I am greatly thankful for. It’s important in the Raid, which you’ll do in a party anyway. Almost nobody in multiplayer will be willing to give a positive or even accept it. and Strikes are just too easy to need intimate communication. It only makes sense to not have public channels in, but it’s nice they have now given people the option.

            again, i agree with your oppinion, and i like the way they exicuted it, however, this is something i feel should have been present before launch. it makes me feel this game wasent developed as long as it should have been, i dont think it was rushed, rather, at times, i feel it was half assed. dont get me wrong, i love the game, i just wish more effort had gone where it was needed.

            Some issues just aren’t always apparent or prominent enough until you have tens of millions of people playing the game. They didn’t realize how bad BF4s servers where until there was 100,000,000 people online at once. Some issues are respectively similar I suppose.

            also, with iron banner, iv seen more lag then ever, am i the only one whos noticed this? i mean, at one point the opposeing team couldent see me at all, it was stupid as hell, is it a lag switch? or is it something with the servers?

            Not me. I’m getting frustrated with iron banner for other reasons. I only ever get paired up with lv 28+ players that play the game too much… I can’t play it properly. I usually run 3.0 KD, but on the new IB i cant even go positive… It’s just crucible but with all weapons dealing more damage, I’m not even getting paired up with anyone 1 level out of mine in any direction so there is no variation in opponents. If it was lagging for me it would hardly make a difference. The problem for me is I just get dropped in games with really competitive players. Even if I de-rank my armour to LV 25 I still only get paired with (literally, and I mean literally) only lv 28+ players. No lag for me, just loads of really annoying players. Haha. I should ask again: “What Hardware are you using?”

            its a lag switch, simply becouse iv never had this issue before, which the thing i wanna experence most, i wanna fight a level 2, and just slowly walk twords him. i get theres the level difference, but couldent they make it rumble, my little brothers been pissing me off in destiny, and i wanna crush him under my boot, also. i dissagree with your statment, this is how iron banner is suposed to be, when i dont lag, and stick with my clan, we win every time, its great.

            I think you misunderstood me. The Iron banner is not supposed to be this way, because this time round they have balanced it again… matchmaking now only pairs you up with people who have the same KD as you. Weapons and armour aren’t balanced but every LV 28-30 has about the same damage weapons anyway. I’m sorry to say you will never come up against a player weaker than you. The whole thing has been balanced again. I have never seen anyone -Lv27 because my KD in crucible was high. I will never get the satisfaction to kill low LV players because their KDs are lower than mine. This whole thing feels fairer than Crucible. Everyone in my game ends up with usually a very similar KD. Everyone tends to get about 0.8 to 1.2. Whereas usually it can be anywhere between 0.05 and 15.0 Let’s face it Crucible has never been more balanced. They felt the weaker players would get thrashed without this balancing system, yet, wasn’t that the whole point? Haha.

            ok, i get you, and yes, that was the whole point, while i am loveing the challenge, (when im not being lagged, it makes me so mad) but when i go in, i got a strong team, so for us, its just like reg crucible, we see no difference, and that does make me mad, i wish it would work on chance so i could fight a low level one time, just to experence the glory of being ?? level, the hive on cosomodrome who terrerized me in beta are dead, i wanna know what it feels like to be them.

            Yeah. Well, I hope your lag problems get fixed before long. I used to have them but a patch resolved it. It might be a console thing.

            and under these circumstances, it doesent suprise me, the scum of destiny rises up when loot is avaliable. there should still be rep gain if you lose, just a lot less, so people arnt so god damn oppressive and let us try.

  • I like the fact that it’s a option. sometimes I don’t even want to talk to my friends, LOL. but in all seriousness like everything else – this has the potential to be a horrible experience especially in the blood thirsty crucible but necessary with strikes and such. We’ll see. And word on the ascendent shards lockout at lvl 27?

    How is it that it is easier to access useless gestures such as making your character wave/point/and dance – than opening a channel to communicate with others or trying to navigate thru the UI in the beginning before a strike/raid or midgame while under fire in a game that revolves around a socializing aspect…

    If they are “listening” to their gamers they should’ve taken some advice that most Destiny players have all agreed upon.

      I hate to break it to you but the vast majority of people prefer to fling random quotes at eachother than communicate properly. Have you forgotten this is the 21st century? Haha. Sorry buddy, but most players care more about a funny dance than to talk properly. In media the Majoirity always wins. Switch it up and there is a que of angry people that can’t access their emotes as quick. It just gives the ignorant people in the destiny community another thing to bitch about. I agree, communication could be and should be a lot better, but cooperative and strategic players are sadly the minority.
