Vex Mythoclast Exotic Review

…a causal loop within the weapon’s mechanism, suggesting that the firing process somehow binds space and time into…

Vex Mythoclast is a primary, Exotic Fusion Rifle.

It can only be acquired by defeating Atheon on hard mode, and it will never be sold by Xûr.

8/10
8.4/10

The good: Bonus damage from Crowd Control, ignores shields.

The bad: Low range and ammo reserve.

Conclusion: Excellent perks, overall it’s great, but not powerful enough.

Weapon Review

The Vex Mythoclast is a primary fusion rifle that is in a class of its own. The only way to obtain this weapon is to defeat Atheon on Hard mode, but even still you may not get it.

If RNGesus was smiling upon you, it’ll work best in the mid-range encounters. It’s one of the coolest looking guns in the game, and with the right perks, it can dominate most weapons.

We’re unsure if this weapon will be able to benefit from the new ultimate Exotic upgrade process.

The Good

This is one of the strongest primary weapons in the game! Don’t mistakenly think you will be completely overpowered with it, but it’s a top 5 choice for endgame content.

This weapon is best used when enemies are at close-medium range, as it’ll be easiest to control its recoil so you can score critical hits.

One of the best aspects of this weapon is the fact that it’s got such useful upgrade perks – and many times you might find it hard to choose which to go with.

Its signature perk, Timeless Mythoclast, allows it to never have to be charged like a normal fusion rifle, which makes it extremely unique. In a sense, the Vex Mythoclast is like Pocket Infinity’s older brother who took a few steroids, and might feel the side effects every so often.

With the Send It perk, you’ll shred opponents with reliable stability. If you can land headshots, you’ll be on par with the SUROS Regime, but you might find yourself failing to players using an Exotic hand cannon.

Even though firing from the hip is easy to do, hitting precision spots makes this gun feel like a mini LMG for the short amount of time that your ammo lasts, and will be necessary to maximize your damage potential.

With the increased attack level of 323 when fully upgraded, this is a fun and powerful gun in PvE (it’ll ignore shields), and can hold its own in PvP.

The Bad

The Vex Mythoclast’s shortcoming is a combination of three problems: low ammo reserve, high recoil, and low range.

You will find yourself constantly reloading and eventually running out of ammo! This is a pain when running the Nightfall or the Vault of Glass; one of the few primary weapons that requires ammo synth’s.

In PvP the low ammo isn’t a huge issue though, and might not even be noticeable for many people.

As for recoil & range, even when upgraded with Send It, you’re going to wish you were using a scout rifle when you see all of the critical shots you’re missing.

It takes about 4-5 headshots to down someone in PvP, but in reality the recoil will cause you to miss some, and it will take about 8 shots total to take someone out.

Cosmetics

One the coolest looking guns in the game? Yes.

Whether aiming down its sights or slinging it across your back in the tower, it has a way of making a lasting impression.

Seductive curves draw your eye all over the weapon; getting closer reveals the weapon has an almost circuit board pattern on it.

The scope is very open and easy to use as well, and the sound is immediately identifiable.

Some legends live forever. Others are overwritten – reshaped by the sheer will of those who believe that any ordeal can be conquered, any foe vanquished, any god cast down.

The Mythoclast is a Vex instrument from some far-flung corner of time and space, mysteriously fit for human hands. Its origins, mechanism of action, and ultimate purpose remain unknown. Perhaps it will reveal itself to you, in time…

Conclusion

The Vex Mythoclast is something of an oddity. It’s not crazy glue good, but it’s nowhere near bad.

It fails to live up to how it’s acquired, being the 1 and only Exotic that’s exclusively dropped from Atheon on hard mode.

Even with the most recent buff to its maximum attack, the low ammo reserve and poor range is what you need to consider before using it.

While it is still extremely fun to use, even some of the Legendary weapons such as the Vision of Confluence could easily deal as much damage.

For PvP this weapon earns a 8/10 and for PvE a 8.4/10.

This weapon deserves a 5/10 or 6/10. Why would I want to use my exotic slot on a weapon that has average damage and insanely low ammo reserve. It’s the most difficult weapon to acquire, so it should inherently be the most powerful. It’s not. Not even when it’s completely maxed. Vision of confluence and fatebringer do more damage, are more efficient and don’t take up your exotic slot. This gun is a waste of developers time and gamers time.

    • Reflex

I agree, I beat Atheon 10x on hard and grinded so hard for this weapon…turns out I never use it ever. Like the article stated, Fatebringers is much better than the Vex Mythoclast in PvE and the Suros still beats the Vex Mythoclast everytime in PvP. Hopefully if you can upgrade in the dark below, the devs will actually make it useful.

      • Christian Jimenez

Yeah hopefully they do improve it. I would honestly use bad juju, now I that it’s been buffed, over the mythoclast. Never having to reload as long as you get precision shots is amazing. Especially for titans getting in the enemies faces who don’t have time to be constantly reloading or searching for ammo. But fatebringer is always my go to gun and will be in the upcoming raid. I might even use the bad juju since it’ll be an excellent thrall killer.

    • hfgjcdghcvmb

dude, vision is scout and fate is hand cannon

      • Christian Jimenez

I think I know that, dude.

        • arghrhvdudrb

then of course it would deal more damage. i am hfgcdghcvmb.

arghrhvdudrb and hfgjcdghcvmb were my fake accounts but it was me.

    • Lee Juriet

HAHAHAHAAHAHAHA…. Try No Land Beyond. Haha.

  • Lee Juriet

wow. Now I know I don’t need to grind for it as hard as I was!

    • Fossas

you should this gun is every glimmer and sweat worth, if you know how to use a gun with almost no recoil

      • Lee Juriet

Dude, I got it. Took me 36 tries, but I got it. And it has recoil, whatcha talking about “no recoil”?

        • Fossas

it’s got really predictable recoil, if you’re any good at fps games you’ll tear shit up with this gun
the reviewer obviously needs to improve their gunskill

          • Lee Juriet

What this dude says; using it like a autorifle, yeah, has fair amount of recoil. Use it like a scout rifle through, almost no recoil!

  • Talentino Max

The reviewer has bad aim, I have no problems getting consistent headshots, not even using the send it perk. If you are not a noob, this gun is great. People with bad gun skill stick with the low recoil weps.

    • bonjovi

exactly what i was thinking when i read this review

  • BAMozzy69 .

As I said on the youtube channel – personally I preferred the Vex Mythoclast pre-pre-patch even pre-patch it was better in my opinion. Whilst it has had a bit of damage buff, the loss of 21 shots from the enhanced battery is more of a loss than the gain from the damage so overall it feels like it has been nerfed. I know its had a bit of a buff in terms of its reserve too as before with 56 shots we had 2x the reserve giving us 168 shots – now we have 5x the mag but that gives us 200 shots but as we have to reload more and it still burns through ammo so quickly it really feels less effective. I think the main benefit of this weapon is for the fusion bounty but prefer to use Visions of Confluence (Solar Scout Rifle) as it has better range, damage, accuracy, reload and ammo reserves

    • Christian

It really should just be a “god-like” weapon. I Don’t think it needed to be nerfed so hard. I don’t have it and never minded people having it when it was OP because it was just so rare. The unrelenting task of getting this weapon, to me, justified people to use it.

  • Jerry Lebeau

Laughable review, the vex is the best pvp gun right now. Stay at a medium range and you will wreck everything and you will be safe from shotguns. I don’t use it very often because it is so unfair!

    • Brighton Molina

well tell that to assholes who can survive 10 shots to the head. fucking hackers.

      • Fossas

it takes 4 shots to the head dimwit

  • Chris Perez

Will the Vex Mythoclast get an attack of 331 from Xur in the next DLC? You can only get it from the VoG so I’m a bit confused.

    • Paul

Really should be higher than 331. To keep the same benefit relative to other exotics it should be 350 (technically 356). But surely they will at least boost it up to not be the weakest attack power of any exotic now available in the game. Would like to see the other VoG weapons be given the 331 upgrade as well. They are now the only legendary weapons in the entire game that drop with a 300 attack rating. While the VoG is less daunting to high level players than it once was, it’s still more difficult and time consuming than most everything else in the game aside from Crota. Yet you can get 331 legendary and exotic from anywhere other than the VoG.

    • bob

it wont, they say because it is received from killing atheon it will be frozen in time and won’t be uprgaded
it will always obliterate everyone on pvp tho 🙂

      • Yo

I have the vex an it took me 4 tries. It is a total beast in pvp it diserves probably a 10. For pve it deserves an 8.5. Let’s just say this review is absolutely horrible. He obviously can’t use the vex and that is why he gave it such a bad reveiw.

  • Hugh Anus

this weapon is good and does not deserve such a bad grade. Considering how hard it is to get, it should probably be a bit better yet it is still a great weapon and fun to use overall. You gave a 9 for pvp and 7 for pve to Thorn and it is complete bullshit to give similar/ inferior grade to the vex !

This test is nonsense, it’s a great weapon better than many others and really pleasant to use so stop saying bullshit everywhere 😉

    • Hugh Anus

plus it’s unstoppable in pvp, i’m first in almost every game i play

  • Mezi-Crochet

This weapon deserves at LEAST 8 in PVP. Personnaly, I think it’s the best PVP Weapon. When you learn to control the “recoil” (Not that bad in reality), this gun is almost unfair in middle range area. Can’t see the 7 here! For PVE, the review is correct cause of the ammo!

  • alex

lol in the video for it “bungi wants this gun to be the best for pve.” if thats the case why did they nerf it into the ground only then slightly buff it making gjallahorn quite literally the best gun for any pve boss? good job bungi….

    • Damnil

I was thinking the very same thing myself.

  • Fossas

this review is dumb, this weapon is a complete beast at both PvP and PvE. only dimwits will think this weapon is bad, and not worth leveling up. this weapon will easily take your exotic slot over almost any exotic exept gjallerhorn for bosses. but when you get to use it and level it up this gun is GOD LIKE. and what other legendary or exotic weaponscan deal 700 damage to the head? and has no recoil.

  • Damnil

Does anyone know if it still ignores shields? I just recently picked it up and it doesn’t appear to ignore shields at all as talked about in the article.

Am I missing something or was this nerfed again?

Patrick Casey is my go to guy on weapon reviews for his objective outlook and friendly tone. I can trust that what he says is fact, and I always look forward to his input on all things destiny. As for the mythoclast, off this analysis, I would conclude that for the player frequents running vog for fun and to grab whatever they can, it is a both worthy and rewarding drop that should be played with often; however it may not hold as much value to a more casual or low skill player, like myself, to get this if it is the sole reason for running vog as I may find it less worth the effort I would’ve put into it. Nevertheless, I would still like to get it if I could, especially since even by this point I’ve still not beaten any of the raids at all. Please nobody gripe that I’m not hard-core enough, I couldn’t care less.

Keep making great videos Patrick Casey,

another clueless reviewer. the vex is the most overused exotic primary in PVP other than the SUROS. and at the beginning it was considered one of the most OP weapons in the game before bungie nerfed it all the way to hell and back .

regardless even though with the nerfs, its still used by a lot of PVP users as well as PVE players.especially during nightfalls when the solar burn is on or during fallen or hive nightfall strikes. they completely owned the shanks and wizards that use solar shields.

there is a reason why its the most sort out exotic raid gear in the game.
