The Good

Vanquisher VIII has the highest Impact of any purchasable auto rifle at a monstrous 28.
This auto rifle is in the high Impact/low RoF archetype, similar to Grim Citizen III, Shadow Price, and the infamous SUROS Regime. Considering the former two auto rifles are no longer obtainable and the latter is an Exotic, Vanquisher VIII or Abyss Defiant (with Focused Fire) are your only low RoF Legendary options until House of Wolves.

This auto rifle will deal 19 body damage and 23 critical damage in PvP, leading to Guardians taking about 8-10 shots before they’re taken down. In PvE tier 1 enemies will take 123 damage to the body and 306 with precision hits.

Vanquisher VIII has solid and balanced stats when compared to the other Legendary auto rifles. Its low rate of fire is useful for keeping crosshairs locked on an enemy’s head, while the high Impact – with the help of Glass Half Full – handles the rest.

The base range, stability, and reload speed are all a little above average. The low rate of fire combined with manageable recoil makes it a breeze to line up shots down field.
Most vendor weapons come with a mishmash of stock perks that don’t truly benefit any style of play, but Vanquisher VIII is the exception. Spray and Play and Glass Half Full work in tandem, rounding out a low magazine of 22 to make for a perk set that feels complimentary.

This weapon feels most effective when you let the magazine run dry to activate Spray and Play, turning a 2.2 second reload speed into a blazing fast 1.5 seconds, while also reaping the (small) benefit of Glass Half Full.

Due to Vanquisher VIII‘s well-balanced perk set, the weapon inspires a uniquely distinguished flow. In PvE, you can forget about the bullets remaining in the magazine altogether, since being caught in a 1 second reload speed is rarely punishing. The more you let the magazine run dry, the less the low magazine will feel like a hindrance.
new monarchy vanquisher VIII review
The stock perks allow it to dispense tremendous & consistent damage, finishing off low tier enemies with ease and with negligible downtime.

In PvP it’s more important to reload when it’s safe, but if the clip runs out in mid range encounters, Spray and Pray will have your back.

The Bad

Using this weapon takes getting used to. The low magazine is jarring at first, and even when you’ve acquired a feel for the weapon, Vanquisher VIII is in dire need of Field Scout, so count yourself lucky if you got it with a random roll.

The weapon’s primary weaknesses are most apparent in PvE. The magazine is so quickly exhausted that it can lead to situations where it comes up a few bullets short of a kill. The problem is compounded when there are multiple targets, further exacerbating the low magazine issue.

In PvP it’ll take about 8 precision shots to down an opponent, and against experienced players equipped with low TTK weapons, you’ll need to really make the magazine count. Be sure to use Fitted Stock for the best stability.

Glass Half Full provides more damage on the bottom half of your magazine, and it will activate often, but the extra 6% damage is minuscule. In PvP you’ll only do a maximum of 1 extra damage per bullet once GHF activates, which equates to a maximum of 9 extra damage.

Vanquisher VIII‘s striking red paint job is bound to turn heads, and if it doesn’t, the Impact surely will. It’s powerful and the default perks compliment each other which make the weapon a blast to use.

If you’re using an Exotic slot on a secondary or heavy weapon, or you’re just in the market for a Legendary auto rifle, this weapon will more than pull its weight. Its faults are few, and even with the recent auto rifle nerf, it still holds up.
VANQUISHER VIII vs abyss defiant
Up For Anything and For The People make excellent alternatives if you’d like a larger magazine and higher base stability, and Abyss Defiant (full review) is arguably much better in PvE.

Vanquisher VIII is a beast, worthy of the grind to obtain it. It loses in every regard to SUROS Regime, but what doesn’t?

For PvP this weapon earns a 8.3/10 and for PvE a 7.5/10.

I have an upgraded Vanquisher from pre-DLC. In regular Crucible will I deal the same damage as the post-DLC version? Just wondering should I bother getting this one.

    • Hanayo Asa

If you’re playing on modes where the level advantages aren’t enabled, then keep your old one. It doesn’t matter.

      • sbrozzi

Sweet. That’s what I thought. Thank you.

        • Hanayo Asa

No problem ! Enjoy your Vanquisher, mate ! 😉

  • Thiago123

My vendor Vanquisher WAS My main primary for PvP. A legendary Gallahad-E with perk set that made it feel more like SUROS. It was an absolute workhorse in the recent Iron Banner, making short work of the auto head shot bounty.
UNFORTUNATELY it has been completely killed by the patch. As a high impact gun it got the brunt of the nerf and the TTK is now abysmal. It can’t hang with hand cannons anymore, much less the now OP pulse rifles (Red Death is a joke. And the full auto Pulses laugh at Bungies intentions- strangers rifle does 33 head shots now…).

    fix the description! =)

u are making a wonderful job with this page, thanks!!!

  • Pete

Got this weapon as a random drop last week with field scout! 42 rounds of glory.

    • Pete

Oh and stability and range perks! : )

  • Keith Christmas

I have one with Counterbalance, High Impact Rounds and Third Eye. Definitely one for the Crucible, I think.

Shame I don’t really play much crucible. Maybe next Iron Banner, if Saladin is selling anything worth grinding the rep for.

  • Issac Tisnado

I got this in t a nightfall not too long ago, I wanna say the Archon priest. At first I was a bit disappointed but I saw the stats and the lovely RED finish, and I was optimistic. It has become one of my favorite, fif not my favorite weapons. It was pretty beast in Iron Banner. Sadly I did not get luck enough to get field scout.

  • Drakan

My pre-patch has the Red DOT-ORS scope which I prefer to the new scope. Also the old one has increased stability. I am now grinding rep to get one with hopefully field scout. I would love to have a 42 round mag.

  • Fenrir

Hello. Sorry to use this space to talk about something different from what the article is about.

Each iron banner you make reviews of each weapon, but this time you didn’t do it for felwinter’s lie.

    Could you do one?

Greetings and as always, great articles.

    • It’s coming soon

  • iflod101

Planet Destiny, you should review Bad Juju for PVP again. I never thought I would be saying this but it’s seriously a top contender for PVP now. I beat out mythoclast and Suros with ease. Not having to reload and faster supers is amazing. Playing a Voidwalker with blink, Bad Juju and Found Verdict is an amazing combo.

    • Edited the scores for it

  • Brett Campbell

Mine has Crowd Control, Lightweight, Cascade, along with the Red Dot ORSI and Focused Lens scopes/sights. I love it.

  • RogueBiskitS

Got one of these awhile ago with perfect balance and third eye; definitely does work in PvP

  • HenryDF

Sorry for going off topic, but I was wondering if you could introduce an easier way of navigating the site? At the moment it’s a bit of a maze, and it’s hard to find something that I’m looking for quickly unless it’s a relatively new piece.

Is there any way I can just search guns and gear similarly to how I can on Destiny DB?

    • Could you be more specific on how navigating currently isn’t easy?

We have a search bar for articles, along with menu categories at the top that separate articles.

Our database can also be searched, and any weapon that we have a review for will be linked on its database page.

      • HenryDF

Sorry, I made that comment without noticing that search bar. It instantly came in useful, thank you very much, sorry for wasting your time.

        • No prob, if you have any other feedback or suggestions to make things easier, please let me know. I use the site so much I could navigate it in my sleep, so it helps to get other perspectives.

  • Tere

Have got last week one with Hip fire, (Field scout, Perfect Balance, Hammer forged) and Glas half full….had one from the Vendor before… but the dropped one will be a beast..;-)

  • ForeverLaxx .

Disagree heavily with Fitted Stock for PvP. High Caliber Rounds is what you use to fight off other ARs like Regime or the various Hand Cannons. Vanquisher has enough base stability with the proper sight that keeping it on target is a simple matter of getting used to the reticule pull.

On this weapon, Fitted Stock is a crutch that causes you to lose winnable fights.

  • Peter Dilullo

I picked up a “For the People” with field scout. Initially I hated high fire rate auto’s, but now the FTP auto has become one of my favourite post-patch weapons. Without field scout though it’d be a tougher call.

  • Cédric B.

Glass half full is such a bad perk, Bungie y u no buff it?

  • LiL-D Da Prince

The 300 version of this gun is my favorite auto rifle, comes with glass half full, field scout (42 bullets), perfect balance, armor rounds and third eye.

  • -Unknown

I’m not sure what’s wrong. I bought this gun after the patch, and in PVP it only does 19 body shots and 21 precision shots.

  • Sammy Z

Can’t disagree more. The post 111111111111 patch killed Auto Rifles. The time to kill is completely unacceptable when compared to Hand Cannons and now Pulse Rifles.

    Review the Red Hand.
