Top 5 Exotic Weapons

Published on: Nov 6, 2014 @ 18:16

Exotics in Destiny are considered the best items in the game. Now that we’ve reviewed nearly every Exotic weapon, this article will rate the best of the best.

With all of the buffs/nerfs recently, and those that are coming, this was a hard list to make. Do you agree with this placement? Let us know your thoughts!

5. GjallarhornGjallarhorn

Gjallarhorn is one of two Exotic Rocket Launcher’s currently in the game, which can be acquired as a random reward from the Crucible/PvE content, or from Xûr for 17 Strange Coins.

It’s named after the mythic trumpet from Norse mythology that brings about the onset of the destruction and renewal of the universe. One of the most powerful weapons in the game, it certainly lives up to its majestic name. The launcher shoots out rockets, while secondary sentries deploy at the site of impact to devastate foes that pass nearby; major destruction!

Statistically, Gjallarhorn is well above average across the board, and excels at medium-long range firefights. The area of effect damage from the Wolfpack Rounds are devastating and can make quick work of Atheon.

4. The Last Wordlast word exotic

The Last Word is one of three Exotic Hand Cannon’s currently in the game, which can be acquired as a random reward from the Crucible/PvE content, or from Xûr for 23 Strange Coins.

It’s is not only fun to use, but arguably the best hand cannon. The recoil is manageable, and you easily get the feel for its range. Later on, once you access the stability upgrade and the Last Word upgrade, the weapon will truly shine.

The recoil is low on this weapon once it is upgraded, and because it’s got the passive Fan Fire perk, you’ll take down your enemies before they have a chance to react! The Last Word upgrade will also increase the precision damage done on targets when firing from the hip. The 8 round magazine is generous. Add in some reload speed gauntlets and it’ll never seem like you actually have to stop shooting.

While The Last Word is still great for PvE, this weapon completely dominates in PvP if used properly. It’s got a distinct sound, unique spin after melee, and the Impact and rate of fire are unmatched!

3. Vex Mythoclastvex mythoclast exotic

The Vex Mythoclast, pre-nerf, would have easily taken the #1 spot. It’s going to get a PvE buff, and it’s hard to recommend it until it does. It’s the only Exotic weapon that’s exclusively obtained in the Vault of Glass (hard mode) raid. We will review this weapon as soon as it gets it PvE buff!

This unique weapon will deal out massive damage to whatever unlucky enemy you set your sights on.

It being a solar full auto primary fusion rifle (makes some bounties very easy), it has a lot going for it. Once you unlock the stability upgrades it makes recoil compensation a breeze. You also have the option between two different magazine sizes. The “Enhanced Battery” upgrade takes your original 21 shot magazine and almost triples it to 56, if you don’t mind losing a bit of range for the extra shots.

This rifle truly showcases the power that the Exotic line of weapons has to offer, even after its damage reduction. The Vex Mythoclast is really in a class of its own, and once fully upgraded, it’s really a blast to use!

2. SUROS Regimesuros regime exotic

SUROS Regime is one of three (4 with Necrochasm) Exotic Auto Rifles, which can be acquired as a random reward from the Crucible/PvE content, or from Xûr for 23 Strange Coins.

This weapon’s stats are so well balanced. It’s rate of fire is great for firing from the hip, and when aiming down sights it slows down just enough so that you can easily land your shots on the head. The high impact means it only takes about 5 headshots to take down enemies in the Crucible, and you’ll probably reduce your foes to 20% health before they even know what hit them!

On top of the very high accuracy and range, the second perk (“Suros Regime“) will cause the bottom half of your magazine to do increased damage. This quickly adds up in the last 5 shots to do massive damage. If that wasn’t enough, the weapon will also heal you every time it deals damage.

It is one of the easiest to control auto rifles in the game, and even with the recent AR nerf, it still preforms well in basically any situation.

1. Ice Breakerice breaker exotic top 5

Ice Breaker is one of two Exotic Sniper Rifles, which can be acquired as a random reward from the Crucible/PvE content, or from Xûr for (only!) 17 Strange Coins.

This weapon deserves the #1 spot for a multitude of reasons, but mainly because of its ability to regenerate ammo. Regenerating ammo is useful in every situation, and is invaluable in situations where you need to be in one place for awhile such as in the Atheon encounter or in a Nightfall.

Unlike the Invective, the ammo just regenerates right into the magazine, at a very consistent rate. This sniper rifle also hits like it has the Traveler’s weight behind it! It has very high Impact & range, so precision shots will be rewarded. It packs quite a punch in PvP too, even if you just land a body shot. The Mulligan perk is also nice since missing a shot with this stings a little more than usual, though the chances of it happening are slim.

Ice Breaker will also replenish some of your other special weapon ammo! If you are out of special ammo, switch to this gun and wait for a few seconds, and then switch back to your special weapon of choice. This is great if your ammo synth’s are on cooldown, and provides unlimited ammo.

Patience and Time is the other Exotic Sniper, which some prefer in PvP for its stability, recoil and rate of fire. Ice Breaker‘s major fault is its high recoil, but for PvE it’s basically a non-issue.

This is the #1 choice because it’s the most versatile weapon in the game.

Hawkmoon > the Last word (especially since I don’t care about PVP so much). I agree on the rest.

    • Guest

I agree, hawkmoon is way better for pve and in my opinion is better for pvp too but i havent tested tlw with the stability mod and without it, it sucks.

    • Tycally Vicano

Agreed. I think Hawkmoon is the best hand cannon currently.

    • Raxs

Hawkmoon is certainly a lot more versatile. I just sadly can’t find any primary that tops The Last Word. The rate of which it drops enemies is just ridiculous. But you will easily burn through a mag in a couple of seconds, which is what the obvious drawback is.

      • Mark Yeats

        and the range….

    • boostedskyline

I’ve been hearing the same but I don’t think they included it since it’s ps exclusive for now

    • SGT_Pannenkoek

too bad I’m on Xbox 🙁

    • Christopher Petrush

I agree Hawkmoon is definitely the best Hand Cannon.

    • FriedCats

Hawkmoon is not on the list because it is a PS4 Timed Exclusive until Fall 2015. This did though get an honorable mention if you watched the video on this.

  • Preme88

Red Death is solid also, in PvE it allows you to play a lil more aggresive knowing all you have to do is take down some weak minion to regen health, and in PvP if you win your 1v1’s it keeps you in the fight for the next enemy that might be around the corner

    • Jack Morrow

I would put it as a close #6. It doesn’t have the power of the gjallarhorn and the last word and autos regime can do far more damage. The Vex mythoclast also does more damage per second and, while it lacks the heal effect it certainly makes up for it with it’s reliability(especially when it’s upgraded). The ice breaker is a complete game changer and deserves it top spot no question.

  • Raxs

It’s nice they’re buffing the Vex for PVE. I had heard it had become quite underwhelming since then. Good call.

  • Minatbar

I don’t agree with Vex mythoclast considering it is the hardest weapom to get in the game from the hardest challenge ,it does not live up to expectations, at all. Why?
Because before and after nerf the mag size is inferior which is 56+112 IF you have a mag+ perk upgraded you keep running out of ammo all the time and after damage nerf it does very bad damage, even my vision of confluence does more damage (legendary scout rifle) and the fire rate is almost the same since it can be fired in auto mode, so no this does not deserve a place in top 5, mayby in top 10 but definitely not top 5.. Considered it’s title of being the best weapon in the game, on contrary it is an utter BS.
    How do i know this?
I have tested it myself because i have it and lots of others weapons, if you don’t believe me you can check my bungie profile, username : Minatbar

    • Jerrican

I agree with the above, till they buff Vex Mythoclast, it is utterly underwhelming. The other not so great exotics do better when compared to it as of this moment.

  • BAMozzy69 .

Icebreaker is certainly one of the better Exotics – purely because of its Regen ammo capability. Whilst I know it has excellent impact and range, I prefer Patience and Time or even Praedyth’s Revenge. The reason being the handling and rate of fire before even considering the perks each has. Unless certain modifiers are on, I rarely use Icebeaker over these 2 snipers. Both have 6 round magazines (after upgrades) and both have fairly good reserves too. It means you have enough Ammo to clear most problems/areas quickly enabling you to safely collect any ammo dropped. I also love Praedyth’s ‘Firefly’ (enemies explode with precision kills) perk
Icebreaker’s 6 round magazine though can get exhausted quickly and often means camping it out until the ammo regenerates sufficiently.
This weeks Nightfall (Mars) is a no-brainer to take Icebreaker. Especially as it doesn’t have ‘burns’ but does have ‘juggler’. I feel the Icebreaker is more situational in PvE (I don’t play PvP) where as both ‘Patience’ and ‘Praedyth’ are more usable in a wider range of activities and more fun too. My preferred sniper is ‘Praedyth’ though as it handles well and being only a Legendary it means I can equip an Exotic elsewhere if I want…

    • IaincredibleX

While Patience and Time and Praedyths Revenge are great for pvp and certain burns Ice Breaker is way better for pve if you know how to use it. Stun lock bosses for days, no reload.
Also alot of good primary legendaries can compete with suros dps. Besides the health regens its not much better than shadow price/vanquisher.

      • BAMozzy69 .

Both my Praedyth and P&T are fully upgraded (as is my Icebreaker) so all carry 6 shots. However both my Praedyth and P&T have a much better recoil and fire rate. This means that I can take out more enemies quicker than is possible with Icebreaker. If you miss a shot with Icebreaker, it takes longer to re-aquire your target – especially if the target is small (headshots on Valus for example)
Taking on bosses in PvE is much easier and quicker with the other 2 snipers. Especially as those bosses take a lot more than 6 shots from any sniper. You often find yourself waiting for the Icebreaker to regen its ammo where the other 2 are still dealing damage and as I said far more quickly and accurately too.
Don’t get me wrong as I do really like the Icebreaker and its regen capability is very useful (particularly in this weeks Nightfall/Heroic Strikes due to modifiers like Juggler and solar based shields.)
I also think Praedyths ‘Firefly’ upgrade is far more effective and useful than ‘Icebreaker’ and certainly more fun.
I take Icebreaker for more situational or specific reasons (solar based enemies, juggler modifier) where as Praedyth and P&T I use for everything else

  • BuckshotGeorge

Out of personal preference I would sub the hand cannon for Plan C (would’ve been Pocket Infinity before it got nerfed). Great list. The Mythoclast extended mag is great for large groups of enemies and fires decent from the hip too. Glad to say I have the top 3 weapons! Now all I need is for Xur to sell Gjallerhorn.

    • boostedskyline

I’ve only got gjallahorn (from normal raid chest) and suros, I’m hoping for ice breaker to be sold

  • inquisitor314

so no for thorn and its side damage application of killing someone in 2 to 3 shots

    • Pino Show

Thorn is a very bad weapon in PvE… And in PvP can be beaten by a lot of other weapon / Hand Cannons… So yeah… I hope with the future buff it’ll become more usable 🙂

      • BAMozzy69 .

I actually prefer Thorn to the Last Word but I am only talking from a PvE perspective. I love the animations of the Last Word but find its Range and Accuracy lacking in PvE. Neither are as good as the Legendary equivalents (Lord High Fixer, Devil You Know).
I can see how the Last Word would be better in PvP with its high fire rate, lower range and good hip fire.
I find Thorn more useful in PvE as it has good range and accuracy. It’s not great in some situations (having lots of Thralls rush you for example) but I would still prefer to use it than the Last Word in PvE.
In truth I think both are more ‘quirky’ than useful – similar in essence to ‘Bad Juju’. Look great but the Legendary equivalents are better – particularly in high level activities.

  • Micah Yang

icebreaker got an 8/10 score and suros got a 10/.10 score and icebreaker is better???

    • IaincredibleX

For pve yeah. There are plenty of good legendary primaries from Atheons, Shadoe Price/Vanquisher, Fatebringer, A1/Voc, ect. But how many legender or bettee snipers have high impact? One, Ice Breaker. Oh, and it regens ammo and stun locks like a boss. It’s better, for pve, period.

  • Micah Yang

Fate of all fools looks good. Sort of like a primary sniper. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=psAaqVivPuc

Also I loved the stranger’s rifle sight so I want this gun.

  • navidee

I still haven’t finished my Pocket Infinity bounty yet, but since its been nerfed, is it even worth finishing? I’ve got like 20 of the 200 kills for the last leg of it…

    • IaincredibleX

It’s really good for solar burn but so is ice breaker…
probably needs a buff back to at least a 4 shot clip to be really viable again. Or faster reload.

  • IaincredibleX

Replace Last Word with Hawkmoon or Plan C and this list is perfect.

  • SGT_Pannenkoek

Wait? Suros is one of the three exotic Autorifles? I only know Suros and Hardlight? which is the other one?

    • Pino Show

There are 3 Auto rifles now: SUROS Regime, Hardlight and Monte Carlo, the PS esclusive weapon alongside with the Hawkmoon… The Nechrochasm is the 4th exotic AR and it’s gonna be introduced in The Dark Below expansion as a drop from the Hard version of the raid Crota’s End, as the Vex Mythoclast is dropped on the hard version of the Vault of Glass 🙂

  • Abstract

Icebreaker is hard to put down. I almost always use it outside the crucible.
Main PvE Setup: Fatebringer, Icebreaker, and Corrective Measure.

Main PvP Setup: Suros Regime, Found Verdict, and Corrective Measure / Hezen Vengence

  • Criff713

I’m curios, when the talked about the Suros, they mentioned it is 1 of 3 (4 with Necrochasm). I thought the Necrochasm was going to be the next “Vex Mythoclast” which would mean it would be unobtainable from Xur. Is this still a rumor, is the Necrochasm just a new Exotic and the next “Vex Mythoclast” is still yet to be revealed? I highly doubt there will not be a completely Exotic unobtainable Primary weapon that will only be obtained through a random reward from beating Crota’s End on Hard Mode.

    • I’m 99.9% sure Necrochasm will not be sold by Xur, sorry if you got a different impression, I was referring to SR

      • Criff713

        Cool, thanks for the reply!

  • BAMozzy69 .

The only 2 Exotics I don’t yet have are ‘Hard Light’ (auto rifle) and ‘Truth’ (Launcher). As I am on Xbox One, I don’t have the PS exclusives either. I do have the majority of Legendary Raid weapons and in all honesty these get used more frequently than ANY of my Exotics.
I tend to use certain Exotics for certain activities – i.e Last weeks Nightfall (Mars, no burn, juggler) suited Icebreaker but this weeks (Venus – Archon, Arc burn) suited Patience and Time more.
My general set-up (PvE) is Atheon’s Epilogue/Visions of Confluence, Praedyth’s Revenge and no particular heavy but prefer LMG’s unless I am trying to upgrade, do specific bounties (Vex is excellent for the Fusion Rifle kills) or end game activities (can depend on mission/strike and modifiers)
Certain Exotics NEVER get used – Super Good Advice, Bad Juju, Mida, Pocket Infinity, Universal Remote….
I just hope they expand the Vault!! 20 spaces just isn’t enough!!!

I think Thorn deserves a spot up here. Maybe knock off one… possibly The Last Word? Don’t get me wrong, it’s a marvelous weapon… until Thorn got buffed, which now lessens the value and effectiveness relative to other hand cannons of TLW. It’s much more capable and effective in PvE and in PvP, something TLW can’t achieve.

  • Will Chin

Fatebringer is best hand cannon imo

  • Killercloud

Sorry Gents, The list is from best to worst…Gjallarhorn, Ice Breaker, Hawkmoon, Mythoclast (Maybe not after 1.1), and arguably a SUROS, but maybe now that auto rifles got further nerfed it would be Red Death.

  • Gangsta Guy

I have the icebreaker it was my very first exotic that i got that wasn’t from xur I love it for that reason I’m not that good with snipers in destiny but I’m a great sniper but I feel as if it’s a bit hyped it’s great sure but the ammo regen isn’t the best you will be sitting around hopeless and especially if this is your power house weapon also in certain nightfalls your fireteam needs to bring down shields I think it’s a great weapon but not deserving the #1 slot.
