The Good

Song of Ir Yût is an OK machine gun, but doesn’t excel at anything in particular other than taking out Hive Majors and Knights.

What does work well on this weapon is its ability to take down a Knight’s Wall of Darkness shield, but of course that’s a situational PvE-only perk.

It also has a high rate of fire with manageable recoil with Smart Drift Control, which allows you to dish out high amounts of damage in a short period of time.

Thankfully it has a very large magazine of 87, which means as long as you can land your shots, you can make quick work out of enemies in the Crucible. It also helps that the reload speed is extremely high; you’ll be able to reload in about 5 seconds (without Flared Magwell).

As shown at the end of the video review, this weapon will also allow you to use your grenades a lot more frequently because of how quickly you can kill enemies with it; each kill increases the reload speed of your grenade by 10%. In encounters like Crota’s End where there’s lots of easy-to-kill enemies, this perk is very convenient.

Unique to the raid weapons is the “Hive Disruptor” perk which increases damage to Hive Majors. You’ll be able to do about 400 additional damage to Hive Majors with this machine gun every 2 seconds. Unlike the Swordbreaker, this weapon does not pass through the 10% of damage reduction on Hive Majors.

The Bad

It’s going to more of a personal preference, but generally I’m not a fan of the high rate of fire/low Impact weapons. I’d much rather use a weapon like Jolder’s Hammer or THE SWARM because of its high stability.

Its Impact rating, tied with a few others, is the lowest of the Legendary heavy machine guns. Even though the magazine size is large, each shot is going to do a low amount of damage.

The low range – second lowest at 16 – causes Song of Ir Yût to be limited to close-medium range if you want to ensure you don’t miss your shots.

Other than the low base stability and range, there’s nothing that really stands out on this weapon over the others, especially in PvP. Dark Breaker and Hive Disruptor are perks that can only be used in PvE, and are situational at that.

Is it worth upgrading? Yes, but I wouldn’t waste your Radiant Energy on the final damage upgrades. Save those Radiant Energies for the primary raid weapons or just convert them into Shards for armor.

For PvE it’s going to work well against the Hive, but that’s about it. It doesn’t shine in any other encounters because of its Hive-specific perks.

In PvP I wouldn’t even bother using it unless you enjoy the high rate of fire. A vendor alternative will serve you just as well if not better. It’s worth noting that if you can control the recoil, it will come in handy at close ranges because of the large magazine size.

For PvP this weapon earns a 6/10 and for PvE a 7/10.

Its certainly not a bad LMG and quite effective in the DLC content as well as quite a few of the disc based missions too – obviously not so good against anything with Solar or Void shields. I know it seems quite specialised, but there is still quite a number of Hive encounters so the Hive Disruptor and to a lesser degree the Dark Breaker perk do come in useful. All of the DLC content features Knights who use that annoying shield ability and Omnigal is a Arc Shielded Hive Major too.
I haven’t maxed this out yet as the Primary weapons (when they are available) are more of a priority so building up my stocks of Radiant Energy for those. I have already maxed out ‘Black Hammer’ though and place this alongside Hunger of Crota in terms of priority in upgrades with Light of the Abyss after these and Swordbreaker last.

Exactly… Like the Light of the Abyss, it’s a interesting weapon, good overall but for the moment, doesn’t worth to spend the precious Radiant energy on it. I fully upgraded the Hunger of crota (God this RL is good), I will do the Blackhammer as soon I could get it (this week I hope) and I’ll stack for the primary (abyss defiant seems powerful and the scout rifle too)

From my perspective it comes down to how frequently I will equip and use these items. Black Hammer may not have the ammo regen capability of Icebreaker but in certain circumstances it actually doesn’t matter. If you manage to land those 3 precision shots, It means you don’t need a big mag or lots in reserve. It can fire more shots in a minute than IB as you don’t need to wait for ammo to regen and it hits much harder too. Taking out the Tank in this weeks Nightfall was a great situation for Black Hammer and worked far more effectively than IB did.
Hunger of Crota and this LMG, I seem to use equally. I don’t use RL’s that much and in a general build, I favour LMG’s. I do equip RL’s for certain specific occasions.
With Light of the Abyss though, I have a fully upgraded Murmur so regardless of how good it is, its less of a priority. I also have a fully upgraded Plan C too. Again going back to my general build preference, I equip Snipers over the other options, therefore Fusions are not as important to me and like I said, I do have other Fusion options too.
I find Song of Ir Yut to be very useful on the new Omnigal Strike – particularly at the final stage as there are lots of shielded Knights and of course Omnigal herself is Arc shielded and a Major too.

  • Erick

it show 37 magazine in the review, is that a bug?

    • 37? If you meant 35, yes, Bungie’s tooltip isn’t accurate

  • Run_Forest_Run

I have this gun and it is almost fully upgraded, save for the last slot. IMHO this is a great machine gun. I have Super Good Advice and Harms Way also, both very good. But this thing cuts enemies down like wheat. Doesn’t hit as hard as Super Good Advise, but wow, I like it. I agree, it is specialized for Hive as you stated, but I am kicking ass with it on any strike. It is a hive CQB go to gun.

On hive strikes like against Omnigul; hear its Song! And its name is Ir Yut bitches!! You can clear a path with this like nobody’s business.

The trick to this weapon is trusting it. That means get up close and personal, and unload point blank. Hive knights have no idea what hit them. Its a keeper. Put a great shot gun in front of it since the 1.1.1 update and become a Farmer. A LEAD FARMER!!!! 😉

  • Kodiak

This gun is an absolute blessing with the Omnigul Nightfall and Weekly.

  • jr240483

unfortunately this MG is better for hive raids and nigthfalls. forget about using it in PVP. especially since the corrective measure is a lot better alternative in PVP.
