Weapon Review

Secret Handshake is a Legendary shotgun that can be purchased for 150 Vanguard Marks and 1 Commendation. It comes standard with excellent perks and decent stats.

The default perks are listed above, click here to see all of its potential perks.

Recommended Perks

Accurized Ballistics
This ballistics upgrade provides the best range.

Hammer Forged
This shotgun has a low base range, so it needs all the help it can get.

The Good

Secret Handshake is a rapid firing shotgun, great to use when you know you’re going up against many enemies.

Its rate of fire is the highest possible, tied with Swordbreaker and a few others. If you happen to land the Full Auto perk, you’ll be tearing through enemies faster than they can run at you.

The stability and reload speed is also well above average. It’s base reload speed is 4.5 seconds, and with Flared Magwell, can be decreased to 3.8 seconds!

The Grenadier perk really makes this shotgun viable in PvE. It takes about 7 kills to bring your grenade energy from 0-100% (each kill = 10%). The first encounter in the raid makes good work of this perk, allowing you to take out some enemies with a grenade, and then easily clear out a few more with your shotgun.

Hammer Forged is the clear choice if you want more range, since the base range is low.

Shot Package, arguably the best perk to have on a shotgun, will tighten the spread of your shots which essentially increases the range.

With its 6 round magazine, it’s an excellent choice for PvP, and the Arc damage makes it more viable in PvE.

The Bad

As can be expected with high rate of fire weapons, the Impact suffers. Again tied with Swordbreaker, it’s got the lowest Impact out of the Legendary shotguns.

You’ll still be able to take tier 1 enemies out in 1 shot though, dealing out about 1,500-4,200 damage, depending on where your shots land.

The base range is also well below average. Thankfully this shotgun comes standard with Hammer Forged, and in addition with Accurized Ballistics, it’s much more respectable.

Looking to upgrade your Found Verdict? Don’t have a shotgun with Shot Package? Secret Handshake has excellent perks from the vendor and is worth the Marks to buy it.

Don’t overlook this shotgun even though it’s base range and Impact are low. Hammer Forged and Shot Package do wonders for this weapon.

For PvP this weapon earns a 9.3/10 and for PvE a 8.9/10.

Absolutely love this beast. Once you get used to zooming and firing and get a feel for the range you have, it’s unstoppable in Crucible.

  • Hanayo Asa

Got a Void one with Rangefinder. Rest of the perks are meh.. I guess I’m gonna buy another one from the vendor, haha !

    • United

i got a void one too! final round hammered forge and shot package looks like i lucked out on the perfect roll

      • ProfessionalCitizen

Not bad. Final round seems like a bit of a waste on a high rof shotgun though ):

        • cool_herc

I agree. If you’re having to get to the last round using a 6 round shotgun you have terrible aim and should strongly consider using a different weapon altogether. If you can’t finish the job in 2 or 3 rounds you’re likely going to get killed well before you can take advantage of the perk anyway.

So far my comedian with performance bonus, flared magwell and luck in the chamber has served me well. It’s got the fastest reload I’ve seen on a shotgun.

  • Oscar Enrique Miranda

i have it with hammer forged and shot package =) love that shotgun… sad it has granadier

  • I accidentally dismantled my Swordbreaker, so I picked this up as a substitute until I’m lucky enough to get my SB back.

    • Dan

Oops. I still can’t get a Swordbreaker to drop for me

      • Hope you get one real soon! Oh, and just to prove I haven’t learned my lesson…last night, I accidentally dismantled another weapon, Final Rest II. Fortunately, I had another Void Fusion Rifle in my vault, Plug One.1…although the Charge Rate is slower than I’d like. *sighs*

        • MakkinjeM

Aaaalmost did so as well with my greatly reforged, maximum upgraded, and only Felwinters Lie last week. Wow was i happy I noticed just in time. pheeww

  • Kenshiro Genjuro

Pretty sure this is the shottie I got as a random drop with full-auto and Void. Single-handedly made the PvP part of the Thorn bounty feasible without me having to actually spend the time learning the maps and playing through all the obnoxious lag.

  • Dan

I like that the vendor version has hammer forged + shot package. Even though the impact isn’t super high I LOVE using this shotgun. It’s a lot of fun, especially after the PvE buff. I would be using Swordbreaker but it still won’t drop from Crota. Sigh. The last thing you don’t have always seems to take forever right?

  • Kevin Perkins

I love this shottie, I have Hammer Forged + Full Auto and it absolutely ssllaayysss…

  • Sean T

Would final round and spray and play make this shotty OP?

    • MakkinjeM

There are practically no enhancements on range on this perkroll. So I personally think, with all new aquired Felwinter’s Lies, after last Iron Banner, this version will be anything but OP in comparison for PvP modes..

  • XEGtechnomancer

I got one from the year end gift bungie gave us. It void with luck in the chamber, shot package and hammer forged. It made short work of the thorn bounty.
