Is That Worth Buying?

Xûr is in town offering new gear. What’s worth your hard-earned Strange Coins?

Remember to finish the Urn of Sacrifice quest before he leaves!

Item Class Subclass Type Strange Coin
Red Death Any Any Pulse Rifle 23
An Insurmountable Skullfort Titan Striker Helm 13
Knucklehead Radar Hunter Any Helm 13
Claws of Ahamkara Warlock Any Gauntlets 13

He’s also selling Exotic Helm Engrams; we have reviews for each of the Exotic helmets.

If you plan on buying An Insurmountable Skullfort or Knucklehead Radar, be sure to buy an Engram first!

Red Deathred death exotic

It’s much more viable in PvE now that pulse rifles have gotten a buff, and it really can make for some easy Crucible games if you can land critical hits.

We have a full review for this weapon but the footage was taken before the most recent buff.

Should I buy it?

Absolutely. It’s been quite awhile since this weapon has been on sale, and now is the perfect time to add it to your arsenal.

The Red Death perk is what really makes this weapon a threat. After every kill you will immediately begin regenerating health, and you will also reload quicker (about 1.15 seconds which is 1 second quicker than normal).

The heal from this perk will also negate the Presence of Crota effect in the raid, so it’s perfect to use for Crota’s End. If for whatever reason you can’t kill an enemy, just shoot your Tripmine grenade and that will count as a kill.

The Unflinching perk meshes well with this since you are more than likely going to be taking fire from other enemies in pretty much any engagement. This makes landing those crucial precision shots that much easier since your sights won’t be bouncing around everywhere.

Besides the quick reload speed (2.15 seconds), all of the stats are average.

If you’re a Gunslinger, Gunslinger’s Trance & Chains of Woe can really bring out the best in this weapon.

Stats Compared to Other Pulse Rifles

  • Above Average: Impact, Reload Speed
  • Below Average: Range, Stability

Notable Perks

  • Unflinching: It’s easier to aim under fire using this weapon.
  • Red Death: Each kill heals you and speeds up reloads.

An Insurmountable Skullfortan insurmountable skullfort

An Insurmountable Skullfort’s unique ability is awesome for Striker Titans that love to punch things (and who doesn’t love to punch?). Coupling this helm with Storm Fist’s Overload or Amplify can help out even more for a reliable and consistent stream of health regeneration.

This helm has an OK roll of 101/108 Discipline, while the max is about 130.

  • Infusion – Replenishes health each time you pick up an Orb of Light.
  • Impact Induction – Causing damage with a melee reduces your grenade cooldown.
  • Improved Transfusion – Kills with Storm Fist immediately trigger health regeneration. You also respawn with full Melee energy.

Should I buy it?

An Insurmountable Skullfort has Discipline and Impact Induction, which will replenish grenade energy just when you damage an enemy with a melee, so that obviously works well together; you’ll be able to use your grenades and melee a lot.

Infusion of course is just very situational, and is nice when it happens, but not something you can rely on. Fortunately the other two perks really mesh well together, and Infusion is just an added bonus.

Ultimately this helmet will serve you well in both PvE and PvP, but probably more so in difficult PvE counters such as Crota’s End hard mode.

Knucklehead Radarknucklehead radar exotic

Each of the Knucklehead Radar‘s perks are great in their own way, though it may serve you best in PvE. This is the only subclass subclass-neutral Hunter Exotic helm other than ExoTac Angel Hunter, coming with HoW.

This helm only has 98/105 Strength, while its max could reach up to ~130.

  • Light the Blade – Causing damage with a grenade reduces your melee cooldown.
  • Inverse Shadow – Increased Super energy gained from killing minions of the Darkness.
  • Sensor Pack – Radar remains visible while aiming Primary Weapons.

Should I buy it?

Being able to see your radar while ADS lends itself well to all playstyles, and all formats of the Crucible; it’s worth picking up for this ability alone!

The downside to Knucklehead Radar is that Inverse Shadow does not work outside of PvE, which means it’s a useless perk in PvP. Furthermore, Sensor Pack will rarely be necessary in PvE, making that perk less useful in PvE.

In PvP you’re left with the increased awareness from your radar and a melee cooldown from grenade damage. For newer players this is a wonderful helm to use until you have better map knowledge and awareness.

In PvE Knucklehead Radar is stronger, because you’ll always be able to damage enemies with your grenades easily, and you’ll also be able to increase your Super energy really easily just by killing enemies.

Claws of Ahamkaraclaws of ahamkara exotics

The Claws of Ahamkara perks will help out in PvE and PvP, and the they also look great. The Warlock melee is arguably the most versatile in Destiny, and having two charges that can be doled out faster than normal makes it even better.

These gauntlets have a little above average roll of 52/55 Discipline and 56/60 Strength, higher than the last time it was sold.

  • Special Weapon Loader – Increases the reload speed of all Special Weapons.
  • Snap Discharge – Increases melee attack speed.
  • The Whispers – Gain an additional charge for Scorch and Energy Drain.

Should I buy it?

If your melee ability isn’t up, these will help you squeeze out in a close quarters fight.

The increased reload to special weapons is also handy for just about every situation, and like all of the Exotic gauntlets, it’ll reduce the reload speed by about .7 seconds.

What makes these especially awesome, is that they’re equally useful for both subclasses. I’d prefer to use these on a Sunsginer for the extra Flame Shield.

Having a perk benefit both subclasses is very rare with Exotic pieces of gear, and it’s nice because you can choose which you prefer.

For people who prefer sniping or hanging back, the Claws of Ahamkara won’t  be as favorable. These will shine on small maps, and for any player who enjoys using special weapons, and likes a in-your-face playstyle.

  • BK54

For Read Death, The stability is above average. The rate of fire is below average, since you can actually count each round per burst lol

I don’t understand why the stability was considered below average :/

    • Compared to other pulse rifles, it has the lowest base stability

      • BK54

Doesn’t mean its true. Use it before saying its stability is bad. Its like judging a book by its cover

        • Bane

Well their reviews are about the weapon’s stats which means comparing numbers, so I doubt them being wrong. Now perhaps you mastered this weapon’s recoil with ease, that’s great for you buddy but it doesn’t change the weapon’s caracteristics. Btw thanks a lot for your review Ryan !
          Have a good one

          • BK54

There isnt much to master is what im trying to get at. But looking at stats alone doesn’t help. Its like saying Gjallarhorn is bad because it doesn’t have 3 rounds per clip.. Using the gun before saying a stat is bad is what needs to happen

          • I never said it was bad weapon, simply that the stability is below average ( the actual review article is slightly outdated, as it was reviewed before the patch.

          • Piloups

Do they say like, anywhere that it is a bad weapon? They state a fact: it has the lowest stability. They did a full review of the weapon and even in this article they say that it totally is worth buying.

          • Adept

If you said “Gjallarhorn has 2 shells in the tube rather than 3” it would be a correct statement. Just as stating that Red Death base stability is lower than average.

Functionally it may not be true, but from a glance it is in fact true. It’s not an in depth review.

          • Spartan1337

I agree with that. It all depends on the player. You can have one player who mastered the gun and another that just sucks with it but he might be unstoppable in the crucible

        • It’s a fact, it has the lowest base stability.

          • steven

I get where bk54 is coming from the rof being low means low stability isn’t as much of a factor maybe adding a little insight instead of just going by the numbers could be helpful to some folk.
            Great work in general

        • ProfessionalCitizen

Check the stat chart, ryan’s correct.

  • Christian

Wow, really great selection. Very, very happy this week! (:

    • Dan

I know a lot of friends that don’t have a red death yet. And I needed a knucklehead and skullfort. Heavy synth again too. Good week

      • butlins12

It’s like you’re channelling me – exactly the same thoughts. Red Death was one of the few exotics I had that my friends didn’t, so I hope RNGesus bears that in mind, now I’m the only one in my group not to have a Gjally!

      • Christian

        It certainly is.

  • Damnil

When did the price of exotic weapons go up? Wasn’t it previously 17 strange coins?

    • Dan

Primary weapons are 23, special and heavy are 17

    • Yeo Bean

17 for special and heavy and specials in primary slot. 23 for primaries

    • Guest

17 for heavy, 23 for Primary, 17 for special

    • sycoteck

In the early weeks heavy’s were only 8

  • kabuki

    hahaha , anti-xurpredictions patch

  • Ian Feagins

Surprisingly good selection today- Red Death in particular (I know a couple of buddies have been looking for it, and I sprung at the chance to buy it), but everything else this weekend is pretty nice, too. Honestly having trouble deciding whether or not I should buy the Knucklehead Radar since I just got the Mask of the Third Man.

Kinda sad that Xur isn’t going to keep this sort of thing up. It’d be nice to see, say, Hard Light or Thunderlord next week, but we all know that isn’t gonna happen.

  • Msordp

i already have red death, but have 3 characters should i buy another one?

    • Charles Burch

With being able to transfer between vault and Guardian easily with a computer. (Do not do transfer while Launching to a planet.) I would save the room for other weapons. Some have Ice Breaker for all 3 Guardians though to save constantly switching.

    • Ian Feagins

I’m gonna say no. Probably a better idea to keep the vault space open for something else, like an exotic you don’t already have (Hard Light, perhaps) or duplicate exotics that are just too good to break down (Thunderlord, Gjallarhorn, and Ice Breaker, for instance).

Now, if you’ve somehow got 20 free vault spaces for it or just love Red Death that much, go ahead.

    • dstripedape

Imo if you can afford it, it’s a good weapon for pvp and high level raiding

  • Antonio Melendez

Ima buy 3 knucklehead radars and a exotic engram. In my opinion engrams aren’t prerolled so im going to start saving motes to buy exotic engrams so when HoW comes out I can hopefully get some of the new exotics

    • Adept

Before you do that I’m pretty sure engrams are prerolled at least as far as their loot table goes. I recall someone debunking this.

Why do you need 3 Knuckleheads?

Sidenote: Level up your factions to just under a new level right before HoW. HoW hits, go in, level all of em, profit from packages.

  • Grymwulf

Today must be my birthday! (It actually is, thanks Xur!)

I’m glad that they did away with that guy’s predictions of Xur and that he’s not selling Universal Remote this week.

  • EnderCreeper01

ryan do you play on xbox? if you don’t do you know anyone at planet destiny that does?

    • Tefty, Wally

      • EnderCreeper01

do you know their gamertags? also do either of them play on 360, if they do could you see if they could friend me? my gamertag is the same as my display name here. thanks.

  • About bloody time

Bungie, thanks for giving your community what they wanted. It only took someone hacking and embarrassing you bad enough for you to finally do something nice for us. At least now we all know how to get things done with you. Thanks again!

    • Keith Christmas

I mean… We HAVE to take this as a tacit admission that they actually can control Xur’s inventory, right? When the predictions for Xur and the weekly strikes have been 100% correct for several weeks on the trot, and then Xur turns up with a completely different selection to what was predicted… There’s no other way we can interpret that, is there?

And I wouldn’t care that much, but does it ever grind my gears that they’ve lied til they’re blue in the face about this for months straight. We’ll see if they own up to having manipulated the inventory, but if they give us a bunch of “Oh, we didn’t do anything. Looks like the guys who claimed to know the future just made lucky guesses” bullshit, then they’ve got literally no respect left for their customers.

If they do own up to it and don’t flat out lie to us again, then… Thanks for Red Death, I guess 🙂

      • About bloody time

I would take it as just such. What is going to be entertaining now, is what they will have Xur offer next week, the week after that and so on. I really hope they continue with things they have rarely or never sold. Their past behavior suggests otherwise, however.

      • WSquared88

Destiny is a game that Bungie created themselves, I would hope that they would have the power to control what Xur sells. Xur is without a doubt controlled by Bungie, he is controlled in a similar way to how Bungie can take over your account at will. It’s their game that they made, they can do whatever they want with it.

    • ProfessionalCitizen

You realize that they didn’t actually get hacked right? It was data mining. And I’d bet a sizable chunk of money this is still completely RNG, they just re-rolled things.

      • About bloody time

Pardon me. Data mining, hacking, stolen microfilm, doesn’t matter how the info was obtained, or what it’s called when you do it. Someone outside of their company went in and found information that was contrary to how they were leading us on with. So they only responded after they were caught. I hope more datamining, hacking, and espionage goes on, so we can find out what else they have been exaggerating, stretching the truth on, misleading, duping us with, fibbing and telling little white lies about.

  • Red Death will be mine! Someone on my CE HM session last week got Red Death, so I don’t have to be jealous anymore! [=

Claws of Ahamkara look nice, but the only time I want to focus on my melee is when it involves a bounty; it’s not as useful on Stories/Strikes where Lightswitch is activated. I’ll stick with my Sunbreakers and Deathsinger’s Grip for now.

I’m wondering if I should take the chance on Exotic Helm Engram. I already have Apotheosis Veil and Skull of Dire Ahamkara maxed out. Obsidian Mind would be nice…but if nothing else, it’s a (relatively) cheap Exotic Shard to dismantle.

    Thanks, Xur! Keep ’em coming!

    • Fenrir

If you like to play iron banner, i do not recommend you to use your motes on engrams. This time, lord saladin will be selling the heavy machine gun and the autorifle and the machine gun is amazing in pvp if you reforge it the way you like it.

      • Oh, thanks for the tip. I do play Iron Banner, but I didn’t have the best of luck with it last time–plus, I was out of town for most of that time. I only managed to reach Rank 2; I was hoping to reach Rank 4 to get the boots because, at the time, I didn’t have the CE Raid (Warlock) boots to try and get to Level 32 (although now I do; I just need 11 more Radiant Shards to max it out). I’m still needing the CE Raid helmet (although I have 2 maxed-out Exotic helmets to get me to 32 in the meantime).
        Thanks again!

        • dstripedape

Claws with fireborn in pvp can get u many many kills, they were my mainstays till couple weeks ago

        • Fenrir

Do not worry. Saladin will be selling the chest and the boots starting this tuesday, both with 36 light.

    • Caleb_D

I’m sorry but the only good warlock exotic armor item is the light beyond nemesis, that helm is the answer to everything when it comes to the raids.

      • I don’t have that, so I don’t know how good it is.

      • Ian Feagins

It’s the only piece with Keeper of the Pack, sure, but the Strength boost isn’t gonna see much use, and Infusion is also on Apotheosis Veil.

Not sure why you think that Light Beyond Nemesis is the only good one.

        • Caleb_D

i looked through all the helmets and the Light beyond nemesis i thought would have been the best for doing the Hard Crota raid considering thats what i do the most

          • Ian Feagins

Except that Keeper of the Pack’s only noticeable bonus during Hard Raids is that you generate more orbs, and you don’t generate that many more. Going off of my experience as a Hunter, you generate a max of one more orb per super, and although it does make using the Bladedancer super a bit more rewarding, Warlocks won’t benefit from it anywhere near as much.

Meanwhile, Apotheosis Veil has Infusion in common (as I already stated) and can heal you when you use your super- so you either clear an area of Thrall/Acolytes/Knights immediately and restore your HP, or you suddenly become an unkillable grenade spamming machine who just got full health outta nowhere. Obsidian Mind allows you to have an unending chain of Nova Bombs (in PvE), which is simply hilariously powerful- go ahead and try that during the first part of Crota’s End, see how trivialized the entire thing suddenly becomes. The Skull of Dire Ahamkara’s the only one I can think of that’s not good at any point in either Hard Raid, but I’d probably think the same of it as I think of Light Beyond Nemesis if it had Infusion.

Honestly, he’s better of with Apotheosis Veil, though LBN is a very good helmet to wear during Nightfalls, Heroics, and Vanguard Strikes in general.

          • Caleb_D

yeah i bought the Apotheosis Veil last week and yeah it does its job with the perks it has

  • sycoteck

    >!!!Hey Ryan!!!<

This site has been running great for about a year now and I was thinking how about you guy use some of your computer magic and cook us up a planet destiny APP, like the bungie companion APP but you know with your sites stuff.

    Just a thought.

    • An iOS app is currently being developed

      • XEGtechnomancer

        Very nice, great work.

      • sycoteck

  • n00b

Noob question from a new player-I want to get the Red Death gun, and I have an exotic shard to upgrade it with Xur, since that’s one of his offered upgrades this weekend.

Should I do that before I start leveling the gun? Upgrade it right away so I don’t have to do it later?

    • not a noob

No no no no no DON’T DO THAT! Upgrading Weapons means pre-dlc weapons getting buffed to the after-dlc stats aka 331 dmg. You DON’T have to upgrade the red death if you upgrade it now.

      • n00b

Oh ok, so if I buy it now, it’s already upgraded and I don’t need to upgrade it with Xur. Correct? Thanks 🙂

        • Tonny

Correct. Never do that unless you own a 300 damage weapon. Or if your equipment has lower intellect, str, or discipline.

          • n00b

            Gotcha, thanks!

  • matters

they patched it on Tuesday allowing them to make changes.

  • Robert

Haven’t signed on in a few months, gotta sign on today and grab that Red Death!

  • shazam iam

Every week since October, I run 2 VOG hards and then Crota normal and hard.

    Every week I don’t get a Ghallahorn.

I wish they would just sell this crap. Maybe make the bosses drop tokens or something. Its ridiculous.

Thank God I finally got a hunger of crota last week so I no longer have to BEG to do Crota hard.

    • MattyLu22

    • dstripedape

I’ve had 6 of them, beat crota on both levels for since it dropped and cant get hunter chest armor. RNG is a MFer lol.

  • iponce96

I still don’t get the Sensor Pack hate for knucklehead radar. It’s not useless in PvE at all. I’ll always vehemently assert that being able to see your radar is the biggest boon to any playstyle. Specifically mine? Admittedly yes, however the increased awareness is something everyone would benefit from. It’s better to not get shot than to be able to eat bullets. Knucklehead Radar is severely underrated in my humble opinion.

  • sllofoot

I would really like a red death AND a skull fort. I have the coins. I’m on vacation ten hours from home. Is there a remote option for me short of hoofing it to a best buy and snagging a vita?

    • WSquared88

Currently the only way to buy items from Xur is by playing the game on one of the four consoles that support it. It would be nice if you could do it remotely, but then it could lead to some issues with people buying things for other people that they don’t actually want
