Weapon Review

Jolder’s Hammer is a Legendary machine gun that can be purchased for 11,500 Glimmer. It comes with subpar perks, so you’ll probably want to use your Motes to Reforge it. Listed below are the recommended perks to watch out for when re-rolling it.

The default perks are listed above, click here to see all of its potential perks.

Be sure to check out our other Legendary weapon reviews as well.

Recommended Reforge Perks

Aggressive Ballistics
You’ll get more damage out of this ballistics upgrade.

Counterbalance / Rodeo
Even though the slow rate of fire helps you control the recoil, the base stability is below average, so any extra can only help you. Avoid Persistence since it’s practically useless in PvP.

Field Scout
The magazine size without this perk is only 26, very low compared to many other machine guns.

Crowd Control / Feeding Frenzy
CC is especially deadly in PvE. You’ll undoubtedly be getting multiple kills with this heavy-hitter, so the more damage, the better.

FF is arguably just as good as Crowd Control, the slow reload speed will be alleviated with this perk. Kills will be easy to get which means you shouldn’t have to worry about its slow base reload speed.

The Good

Jolder’s Hammer: Your enemy has no chance against it. It’s probably my personal favorite machine gun, not only for its looks, but because it can be Reforged to be so much better than most machine guns available.

This weapon is in the high Impact/low RoF archetype – matched with Against All Odds (full review) – which is arguably much better than the alternative. It’s able to take down Guardians in just 3-4 shots, and even though the stability isn’t great, the low rate of fire helps keep your aim steady.
jolder's hammer review
Its range is also above average, almost tied with Tunderlord. If you’re on a larger map or are taking out most of your foes from a distance, Hammer Forged and Rangefinder will do wonders for you.

The best perks to roll in column 3 are Counterbalance or Rodeo. There’s not much difference between the two, as they’ll both increase the stability when firing. Thankfully even without these perks, the slow rate of fire makes controlling the recoil fairly easy.

The default column 3 perk is Persistence, and while this is OK for PvE, you’ll hardly ever take advantage of it in PvP; you’ll kill someone in 3-4 shots.

Reforging for Field Scout is going to be essential too. It will nearly double the magazine size, obviously increasing your damage potential and reducing the amount of reloads.

The Bad

There’s really not much to dislike, unless you’re unable to Reforge the weapon because of a lack of Motes.

The main issue comes from its slow reload speed and average range, but both of these things can be improved with the proper perks. The base reload speed clocks in at a sluggish 5 seconds.
jolder's hammer pve damage
If you’re stuck with the default perks, as mentioned above, Persistence isn’t going to be useful in PvP. To make use of it you’ve got to continiously hold down the trigger, and by the time it starts to kick in, you’ve already killed your opponent.

Grenadier isn’t too bad, certainly not as useless as “Who’s Next?”

It’s got so much going for it already just because of its impressive stats, but since you’re able to re-roll Jolder’s Hammer, it has the potential to be the best Legendary machine gun.

If you’re unable to purchase this weapon, you’re definitely missing out. Rank up, farm some Glimmer, and experience greatness!

For PvP this weapon earns a 9/10 and for PvE a 9/10.

  • Grymwulf

Got one with Counterbalance, Field Scout, and Who’s Next (increases reload speed upon a kill with the final round in a magazine). Good enough or should I keep rerolling

    • SpankingFan

When you have 50 rounds to kill someone, relying on the final round to kill is very unpractical, on its own is probably the worst perk for a machine gun

    • Tenabrus

no matter what Who’s Next is an absolute deal breaker, it’s basically a “screw you” because you have a near perfect roll

    • Kenshiro Genjuro

Field scout is awfully good though. Whether or not to throw more motes in is up to you. Lots of motes handy and mostly using for PvP, I would reroll. Mostly PvE, then it depends what else I might want to use motes on.

    • Grymwulf

Took ya’lls advice and rerolled until I got Counterbalance, Field Scout, and Feeding Frenzy. What sayest thou now?

  • Holy Mackerel

Thoughts on having CQB Ballistics and Rangefinder for Jolder’s Hammer?

  • MyName

Big fan of these machineguns. I rolled a Solar gun with spray and play, field scout and reactive reload. And a void one with counterbalance, field scout and surplus.

  • RAZR 3D

Nice vid as usual. I got a very nice roll, aggressive ballistics, rangefinder, field scout, Perfect Balance, Flared Magwell, Crowd Control 🙂 Cost me 30 motes though

    • Anon

Outstanding roll, congrats. I’ve got nearly the same gun (Rangefinder, Field Scout, Crowd Control) but haven’t managed to get Aggressive Ballistics with any decent rolls, so mine has Accurized.

I also rolled a couple more Field Scout Hammers in the other two elements for PvE (with perks like Persistence, Surplus, Grenadier).

I’d grind glimmer for a fourth Hammer to get Aggressive Ballistics, but I blew all the rest of my motes on a Rad Fury that has been uncooperative the last couple IBs. It’s eaten countless motes and simply refuses to give me Grenades and Horseshoes and Field Scout (preferably with Clown Cartridge, but at this point I’d take anything in column 6).

On that note, motes are weird in that they come easily over time, but are one of the most frustrating things to grind for when you run out and have exhausted all the easy short-notice sources like the Eris bounty. When you really want motes, engrams and public event packages *always* come up asc mats. The only sure thing is leveling up, but that takes forever.

    • guest

i have the exact same roll and it took me about 30 motes too

  • Dan

I got one with Smart Drift Control, Counterbalance, Hammer Forged, and Grenadier on a re-roll. The stability is super high as well as the range. Would this be decent for PvP even though no field Scout? I will try to roll my 2nd one with field scout too, but I only have like 4 tries left

    • RAZR 3D

Buy another Jolders Hammer and use the motes for another couple or rolls to see if you can improve upon this one. And go to Eris and get the Motes reward Bounty to earn 3 more motes if you need them

      • Dan

Hey thanks! So here’s an update, what do you think of this one? I’ve used up all my motes on a 2nd and 3rd Hammer. I believe the motes bounty can only be used once a week so I’m out of luck there. But I got one with smart drift (which gives decent stability), field scout, and crowd control. The first perk is hip fire, but this one was the best roll I got. I kept that one as is and continued rolling a 3rd one until I ran out of motes but kept getting crap perks

        • RAZR 3D

Yeah that sounds like a beast. Field scout and crowd control are top tier perks for this gun. If only you could have only got Rangefinder in the first slot instead of hip fire it would have been even better. But still…. You got a very nice Hammer in your hands right there 🙂

          • Dan

Cool, thanks. I thought it was pretty good, I didn’t want to risk losing those last 2 perks because most of my rolls weren’t going well. I’ll try to roll my 3rd one next Iron Banner, see if I can those 2 with a better first perk. I have all the exotics so I can save all the motes specifically for this stuff

      • RED0001

I got one with agressive ballistics, take a knee, field scout, and crowd control. Worth keeping?

        • RAZR 3D

Definitely. Take a knee is a bit pointless but the other 3 perks more than make up for it. Definite keepee

  • Co

Pardon my question but, can the dmg type (solar, arc, void) also change when rerolling?

    • Dan

Yes it can. Though after a lot of re rolls I only came up with Arc or Solar. I know Void is possible too but it seems like it was more rare, for me at least

      • Co

Thanks a lot for your quick reply!

        • Dan

          No problem! glad to help

      • Andrew

Heh. I only rolled a solar once through about 15 re-rolls. Got lots of Void and Arc options. Ended up staying with a void one because of the other perks. I wanted a solar one preferably, maybe even an Arc one.

        • Dan

Yeah, go figure. Gotta love that RNG

  • Finlay Jones

Jolders is first IBanner weapon I’ve been disappointed with. The stock AAO is just as good.

    • Anon

Well, the stock AAO is as good or better than many Jolder’s rolls, but there are certainly some better rolls possible.

To your point, the native stats on AAO and JH are very similar. AAO has a little more range, JH a chunk more stability, but that’s it.

But that’s what was so awesome about AAO going on sale with such a great vendor roll. Pre-TDB, Jolder’s had no peer, and it was dominant. We were simply lucky when AAO came (with Field Scout no less). In my opinion, it was one of the very few outstanding vendor guns that came with TDB. Most TDB vendor stuff is terrible.

  • blake

i got one with grenadier, field scout, soft ballistics, and rodeo. what do you think is should re roll it next time the ib comes around or should i keep it? the only perk that i’m not a huge fan of is the grenadier perk but would seem decent in pve but pretty useless in pvp

  • jake rowland

when are u guys planning on a deviant gravity review?

  • Phillip Todd

Somehow got counterbalance, perfect balance, feeding frenzy, and accurized ballistics on the first roll… No field scout though

  • Nick

This is my roll: Aggressive Ballistic – Rodeo – Flared Magwell – Reactive Reload… What do you think… Good one, or bad one?

    • Nick

      …and Arc Damage

      • RAZR 3D

        Very nice

  • Keith Christmas

I’ve had a (300 damage) version of this since months ago. I spent about 100 motes rerolling for the perfect one, and eventually I got Rodeo, Field Scout and Feeding Frenzy (with arc damage). It is arguably the best MG in the game, rivalled only by Against All Odds and Thunderlord. Love it

    • Adam

I got the exact same roll, but i only spent 1 moe of light 🙂

  • Overlord

    How is my roll?

I rerolled it once and thought it was a decent roll, thoughts??

  • Not Two Phased

Managed to get Aggressive Ballistics, Counterbalance, Perfect Balance, Crowd Control on mine with about 20 motes

  • Desmond Spencer

hey I’m looking for a few people to run some night fall missions with as well as a few raids I’m a level 28 tighten and just looking for a few cool people to run with [email protected]

  • Michael Robinson

I watched the review and was intrigued by this gun, usually not a big fan of machine guns but wanted to try it out. Re-rolled it a dozen times and got aggressive ballistics, rodeo, field scout, feeding frenzy. Maxed it out in a day and I have to say this is my new fav gun! Got Arc damage too so this week I tore through the nightfall with this gun.

  • ORB1T4L

Yesterday, I used it against Atheon, with Field Scout, and it’s a beast, this + Ice Breaker or Blackhammer… Well, I tried and adopted it, it’s definitely a great combination if you need high DPS.

  • Cybranwarrior

I got this gun last iron banner, i was bummed as i used all my motes so i had 4 to re-roll it…

on the second and last re-roll i got counterbalance, field scout and crowd control, with void damage. hell yeah!
