House of Wolves: Reef Social Space

Published on: Feb 25, 2015 @ 17:57

With the latest patch came a few database updates, each coming with the House of Wolves in Q2.

Reef Social Space

The first and most notable addition is the “Reef Social Space” – what we can assume is going to be a Tower-like area on the Reef. “Meet other Guardians as they prepare for new adventures”16 other players can be in this area.

We will most likely come here to interact with the Queen, turning in bounties and quests to her.

Most of you may remember the very short preview of this area that we featured in the beginning of this video.

This destination title and description are currently placeholders.

Name Changes

Not too exciting, but the Strike and mission names that we listed here have been changed for whatever reason.

Currently the missions do not have any descriptions, and the Strike description hasn’t changed.

Images via megamanexe4:

  • Belly of the Beast – Strike
  • Tracking Quarry – Level 28
  • Pact of Wolves – Level 29
  • Path of the Traitor – Level 30

You can read the old mission names and descriptions here.

If you want to get a preview of the “Belly of the Beast” Strike, check out this video:

Quests

It looks like there’s going to be at least 3 new quests as well, but again, the names and descriptions for these are just placeholders for now:

house of wolves quests

  • Infidel – Level 29
  • Nightcrawler – Level 30
  • Safari – Level 30

Inferno

The new Crucible mode got a slight description change, now it says: “No trackers and simplified scoring.”

It looks like Inferno Salvage is being saved until the House of Wolves is released, but it’s expected that Inferno Control will be playable from March 3rd-10th.

    wow cut content

    • Christian

Yes, this was shown in the original content, but no, it was, nor was anything else ever cut from the game to be re-added later. This was always the plan. The DLC content was long planned before the game was even revealed.

The common mistake is that a lot of people think that Game development is linear. They think they finish making the main game, start on DLC 1, then DLC 2. But that isn’t what happens.

Modelling, Texturing and environment design is Always done first. Bungie will not make a single new area from this point on because it was all finished long ago so they could get it out of the way and develop things like A.I, Scripting Events and Mechanics that will go in the environments. None of this stuff is possible without the base environment, which is why the environment is always done first. Like Fallout, Skyrim and other Open world games, the DLC areas are usually in the game before release. There is no point keeping them in storage a months, they may as well be put in the game ready for when they reach the few short months they have the refine the DLC content.

Based on the logic that DLC content is only developed after it has been confirmed, people are going to assume that if the content was already in the game, it was cut, but it’s just not the case. It was designed for the DLC, just wasn’t ready to be used yet. You can’t make an entire DLC in 3 months. It usually takes just over half a year. Most of the lengthy stuff (Building the world and environments) is tackled first, so they can start making things in response to the game’s current status. If that makes sense.

  • True Radiant Free

    Reef Social Space yes!

  • Riley Hall

    Awesome.!!

  • Adamms

Notice in the far left corner, there is a Fallen just walking around. It will be really cool if they are like the Frames from the Tower.

    • Kenshiro Genjuro

Yeah I’m just this Fallen dude walking around with a big ass gun don’t mind me.

Even better would be if they added Fallen as a character type we could choose to build guardians on, in addition to humans, awoken, and exos.

  • Alan

Nice. Can’t wait to revisit the Reef orbit screen. Mesmerizing!

    • Dalaros

If you do the Eye of the Gate Lord mission on the first difficulty, after it takes you out of the mission you will be in the Reef.

  • NLK3

We need these modes to be permanent and have customizability like in other shooters. I want to make a game where everybody only has heavy weapons or no supers/grenades, or infinite grenade/melee charge. I liked custom game types in other games, and this one would have been dope with powers and all. And is it because it’s an online game that it can’t have split screen? My bro and I play the game, but can’t play together without another PS3 and game copy, which I don’t plan on doing with the PS4 already out.

    • Christian

      Would be cool.

And Splitscreen doesn’t exist because of performance issues. If there are two screens, the game has to render everything twice! With graphics like destiny, it will turn your game into a slide show. It just wont be possible. This is why the split-screen aspect of modern games is declining. Graphics are just too important because of how anticipated and appreciated they are. Games that do have splitscreen have a special system built in that takes away details to increase performance speed. That would seem a bit unnecessary of an add. Destiny should be added to with other useful features, it is one of those games that needs expansion above all.

The skulls on The Arena worry me a bit. See, considering the name, the “test yourself” description, and the addition of weekly modifiers… I am genuinely concerned that it’s basically gonna be horde mode rather than a proper full raid.

And if that is the case… Man, that is a really lousy thing to be charging us £20 for…

    • I believe that’s actually not going to happen, and I’ve removed it from the article.

I think the database is looking at it as a Strike and a Raid for some reason, I don’t think it’s intended to be that way.

    • insanetrasher

Well, I’d take this kind of mode/challenge over a raid that looks like Crota in terms of size/lenght/use of game mechanics.

      • Keith Christmas

Well… Yes and no. Do I think a horde/firefight mode could be a lot of fun? Sure. With the number of missions that are fighting off waves while Ghost opens a door, it’s arguably halfway there already.

But do I also think that should be a new mode on currently existing maps rather than doing it as what would be the laziest, least imaginative possible excuse for a raid? Absolutely.

        • insanetrasher

We do agree on the fact that it should be a separate mode. But honestly Bungie proved that they are not very imaginative so far and/or that we should not have high expectations from what they add to the game.

So, I do have good expectations from HoW (this DLC will probably be a turning point in Destiny life) but I doubt we’ll see this kind of new mode added to the game. In that case if I’d have to chose between another Crota’s End or a “new mode” I’d take the new mode.

  • Lee Juriet

Annnndddd still not enough content added for me to stay interested very long!

    • Petr Švancara

Yea, I agree with you. . Destiny is sooner or later going down. Maybe that I change my opinion, if they let us download some new planet that they can offer us for free. But, let me guess. . they rather put that on the Destiny 2.

    • Christian

A lot more than any other FPS, so I’m pretty happy about that. Only issue for me is that Destiny has a system that makes players progress in a different way. A lot of content, but it means we will replay the content a lot more than other FPSs to get to the juicy bits. If the activities are lengthier and more repayable that is all I need. I expect we’ll have to wait for the comet for more things like that though.

  • yung salmon

What if the new arena (raid or whatever it is) is actual going to be a swarm/firefight mode wear you get rewards by how far you go and what difficulty you select. Its been all over the forums that people want it added to the game.

    • insanetrasher

That would definitely be the best move they could make to keep players interested in the game.

      • Christian

I would like that too. Sure the Raids already are pretty amazing mechanically, but I could really appreciate this. The basics are sometimes too good to turn down.

        • insanetrasher

Especially in Destiny. Even those that hate the game must admit that the core fps mechanics in this game are amazing.

          • Christian

Totally. Once Bungie have a true idea on how to make the game constantly playable it will be the best thing in gaming. It’s just this first game had a few missed shots and a few imperfections. A new game mode like this is a step in the right direction. It is something you wont mind playing over as much because you are always pushed by the motive that you can do better than your last attempt.

          • insanetrasher

Exactly. Let’s just hope we won’t have to wait further than “Comet” to see this.

          • Christian

Totally. That is why I always preferred Firefight in Halo over Spartan Ops. Much more interesting. I wouldn’t even mind seeing multiplayer maps with A.I. If that means it would be out quicker I certainly wouldn’t mind (Maps built from scratch are always the best though).

    • Garris

The Arena is just the name of the raid

  • Casey

Here’s what I’m excited for. Personally I love looking at my armour in game and dancing works well, but not good enough. I cannot wait to see my helmet in a tower like space and show off my sweet helmet!

  • Petr Švancara

I just wonder how they explain that open area. Guardians put off their helmets only in the breathable environment, like in Tower for example. So, should be there a guardians with or without helmets? Because, all I can see is one huge window that point directly to the space. It would be logic to have helmets here, especially if there is no oxygen in the area. And another thing is, that I already see this purple environment at the previous trailers, long before anyone even know something about both Dark Below or House of Wolves DLC’s. So, this is nothing new again, Bungie just use previously canceled content. They already said, that the Reef would be another Tower-like area shortly before the game launch. It’s really surprising to see previously created content that they showing us now as a something new! Destiny is just going down, no matter what Bungie can or want to do with it. They (Bungie) have excellent potencial for great designs and graphics, but that is not all that Destiny need for survive. . and not any of these DLC’s can change this fact. Especially if they already working on a Destiny 2, instead of trying to made their first game as good as Halo once was.

I understand you, I know that it is just a one of many specific ways how to create a future DLC’s like in many other games today, I know this is normal. But it still can’t change that fact, that they have their own option if they show that kind of content or if they rather not show it at all. You know, they released many false trailers, because they let us to see things that we still can’t have. Let me explain this. . I think that when you create a video or trailer that introduce some kind of product, the first thing that you need to do is show things that should be related with everything what that trailer or video truly present, right? For example, you just can’t show the video where is a car that have capability of speed around 300Km/h, when you selling exactly that same car, but only with half speed around 150Km/h. There is a nice name for this kind of commerce lies, it’s called “false advertising”. And another fact is, that Bungie already said about this Reef area shorlty before the release of Destiny. They said that Reef would be something like another tower area for guardians, there was not even a single word about this as a future DLC content! Then I buy the game and start playing it, after that I soon understand that they just lied to us again, because only time when you see the whole Reef is in a couple of missions, and you still can’t walk in there. So, they don’t do what they are promise, and behind all of it is nothing more than a false advertising. I love(d) Bungie for their previous games (Halo, Oni) I know they are good enough, but since they making on Destiny. . everything that made them so good is now gone. I think that Activision have bigger word in the terms of what Bungie can do or can’t do, damn for sure! But this is also a problem of Bungie itself, it was their decision what kind of partner they choose for them to (help) fuck things up.

        • Christian

I see your frustration. However, did you know that when you watch an Advert for a car, it’s not a real car at all? It’s actually a 3D model that has been designed in a modelling package. When you see those “Russian Standard Vodka” adverts, it’s not real Vodka and Ice they pour into the glass. It’s a fluid simulation. Nothing we watch on TV and in adverts is real or apparent. It’s all false. But it isn’t unethical.

I don’t think it was in Bungie’s Intentions to lure people into buying the game by showing the reef. The Idea would be is that people would watch the trailer and forget all about the reef being shown. It’s solely there the illustrate the beauty of the games engine and lighting, not the actual Reef itself. The trailer never claimed that all of that content would appear in the full game. Matter of the fact is that almost all games do this. They throw in little future releases to drop hints and get people exited for the future, showing them there is truly is more to see.

They don’t ever do anything to Lie or Trick players. It’s all just down to superstitions and conspiracies. Truth is, developing this game is a lot of hard work, plus it is a first of it’s kind. Not everything will gotten right the first time around. When you compare a game like Destiny to Halo or Oni, you can see how insignificant they are compared. Destiny is and will always require a lot more maintenance, content and work done on it. It wont roll as smoothly as a game like Halo, because Halo is linear and straight forward. It has one Campaign, one Extra and one Multiplayer lobby. There isn’t much that can be stress tested. Destiny has: Story, Patrols, Strikes, Raids, Crucible and Quests. There is a lot more to overlook.

Honestly. I always knew Destiny wouldn’t be mind blowing until at least the second release. The first one is a tad messy. When the second one is out all of the things we had problems with will most likely be gone. I’ll probably wait for that,

Funny coincidence…thanks to irritating connectivity issues on my Xbox, I was spat out to “orbit” in The Reef on the way to the first campaign cutscene with the queen yesterday (when it has to be selected as a destination).

Didn’t know if they’d yet put in “footage” for The Reef if you fly from “orbit” to a local destination (like when you orbit Earth then fly to the tower, you get to watch your ship flying into Earth’s atmosphere while it loads). But I set the destination to speak with the queen, and there it was, my ship flying through a bunch of deep purple clouds.

    Bungie loves purple.

  • All 3 of my characters are level 32. The new DLC sounds like it’ll be way to easy if all 3 story levels are 28.

    • David B

28 will be the base level, there will be most likely be a 30 and a 32 level options.
