Hard Lighthard light exotic review

The first time this has been sold, Hard Light has been changed in many ways from its original version. The Exotic patch upped the stability by a substantial amount allowing you to completely maximize it if you choose the correct perks. It was brilliant in that form, but the recent auto rifle causes it to do almost no damage in PvE.

Check out how we place it in our PvP and PvE Exotic tier list.

Should I buy it?

Its rate of fire and impact is right in the middle archetype; faster than Vanquisher VIII but slower than Payback SOS.

The base range and stability are above average, especially the stability, just slightly worse than For The People.

When it comes down to it, the weapon is reliable and stable, but it’s arguably most useful in PvP since the damage wasn’t affected as much there.

Unfortunately the auto rifle nerf negates pretty much all of the good things about it, and makes it a poor choice for your loadout.

If you are skilled enough to be successful with it, any scout or pulse rifle will do a better job for you. You simply are not rewarded enough, and without Arc damage to give it more umph in PvE, there’s not many reasons to have it take up your Exotic slot.

Alternatives

Stats Compared to Other Auto Rifles

  • Above Average: Stability, Reload Speed
  • Average: Range

Notable Perks

  • Glass Half Full: The bottom half of each magazine causes additional damage.
  • Volatile Light: Rounds fired from this weapon overpenetrate targets and ricochet on hard surfaces.

Mk. 44 Stand Asidesmk 44 stand asides exotic

The Mk. 44 Stand Asides, cosmetically similar to Ruin Wings, are an OK choice for any PvP-focused Striker who enjoys getting up close and personal with the enemy.

These boots have a horrible roll of 107/115 Strength, while the max is about 160.

Talents

  • Heavy Weapon Ammo – Increases the amount of Heavy Weapon ammunition you can carry.
  • Be Somewhere Else – Increases the duration Shoulder Charge remains active.

Should I buy it?

Often you’ll find that the window for shoulder charge is too short, having to plan your movement around getting that shoulder charge kill. These boots will extend the time it’s available by about 3 seconds, increasing it to 8 seconds from 5.

These will enable you to run a bit longer, and the high Strength will ensure a quick followup Storm Fist.

Use the Transfusion talent to further aid you on the field with health regeneration after a kill with Shoulder Charge.

If you need a PvP-specific Exotic for your Striker, give these a shot. Keep in mind that if you’ve already got an armor piece that increases heavy weapon ammo, it’s not going to stack with these boots.

We don’t recommend using these in PvE, and we can’t recommend buying these now because of their poor roll.

Mask of the Third Manmask of the third man review

This is a helm that every Bladedancer should own. Mask of the Third Man‘s unique ability is reduces the amount of Super energy used when attacking with Arc Blade. Couple this helm with the Encore talent for even more time with the Arc Blade.

This helm has an average roll of 93/100 Intellect.

Talents

  • Infusion – Replenishes health each time you pick up an Orb of Light.
  • Switchblade – Increases melee attack speed.
  • Unstable Current – Arc Blade attacks use less super energy.

Should I buy it?

If there are encounters that have swarms of enemies, like the first phase of Templar or thelamps in Crota’s End, you can easily double or triple the amount of time you’re able to use Arc Blade.

In PvP, Mask of the Third Man will allow for a bit more of an extension as well, since every kill won’t be using up as much energy.

Mask of the Third Man, being the only Exotic helm that’s specific to the Bladedancer, is a great choice if you enjoy that subclass. You’re going to always make use out of the Switchblade perk since you’ll undoubtedly be using your melee a lot.

While having the increased melee attack speed from Switchblade is great (Fast Twitch for even more speed), Infusion’s health regeneration from Orb’s of Light will only be used in certain situations.

Infusion does come in handy in in Crota’s End from Crota’s Presence, and from other close-range PvE encounters, but it’s a niche ability.

Apotheosis VeilApotheosis Veil review

Similar to Light Beyond Nemesis, the Apotheosis Veil is equipped with Infusion which regenerates your heath when picking up orbs.

This helm has an OK roll of 106/114 Discipline, while the max is 130+

Talents

  • Serpent’s Tail – Causing damage with a melee reduces your grenade cooldown.
  • Infusion – Replenishes health each time you pick up an Orb of Light.
  • Private Reserves – Immediately regenerate health on activating your Super.

Should I buy it?

Uniquely, this helmet is equipped with the Private Reserves perk that triggers health regeneration when Super abilities are activated.

Private Reserves is one of those perks that can potentially save your life and turn around and engagement, equally useful in PvP and PvE, but is a perk that will only benefit you in a few situations.

This is another piece of gear that strongly encourages a grenade lobbing playstyle. Any melee damage causes a boost in the recharge of your grenades; you don’t even have to land a kill to get more energy.

While Fireborn Sunsingers won’t find much use in the Apotheosis Veil, a Voidwalker or Radiant Skin Sunsinger’s can make interesting changes to their playstyle with it.

If you’re low on health, you can pop your Nova Bomb to obliterate anything nearby and let your health regenerate. As a Sunsinger, you can activate your Radiant Skin and regain your health before you even enter a fight.

Private Reserves is a niche perk, but it can be worked into pretty much any playstyle with ease. In Crota’s End hard mode, this perk plus Infusion will allow you to easily regenerate health and is perfect for the Crota encounter.

This is an OK helm to have as any Warlock, as it’s subclass-neutral, but we can’t recommend it because Infusion and Private Reserves are too niche.

  • metalman5150

    wow @ hard light

  • Password?

Save your coins, Hard light isn’t worth the space it will take up in your inventory. It wasn’t very good before DB, was decent after the update then took a screaming nose dive after the last nerf. Even if you like HROF rifles, this one isn’t very good compared to your legendary options.

  • guest

hard light looks cool tho, but a very poor exotic, if the impact was better i wouldnt mind the recoil

    • Ian Feagins

Speaking from experience, the recoil on Hard Light is easily among the most manageable I’ve seen on an auto rifle, and that’s before you get Perfect Balance. Also, while Volatile Light may not seem like much, it does, in fact, make a difference and makes Hard Light into a very fun gun to use.

It’s very much a judgement call on whether or not you should buy it, but I’d like to point out that the article is very much lying when it says that Hard Light’s PvE damage output is too low to be worth the slot- outside of Nightfalls and Raids, Hard Light does it’s job and it does it well. I’m honestly surprised that I never see anyone else using it.

      • NLK3

The armor piercing is good while the ricochet, though bounces back when going through enemies only, is only novelty. As a weapon that shoots light, a hidden perk should be doing normal damage to all shields, no bonuses though, since it shoots (fictionally) “universal arc, solar, and void light, but all colliding against each other to make each weaker”. My own idea. Then the damage would be worth it, skip rounds or not.

  • Pierre Lamy

I’ve had Hard Light for months, but don’t use it anymore after the latest patch. It was marginal before the patch, sometimes fun in the first part of Omnigul. The range and stability are simply atrocious. The perk is not noticable, I got same results using any other auto rifle.

  • JC

Hello! just a quick question: mask of the third man you say that it has a ok roll of 106/114 intellect while the max is 130. Is there any way to upgrade the item to be 130? or you’ll be stuck with 114?

    Thanks in advance!

    • Marco

There’s no way to update it past the set value when it’s sold. So yeah you’ll be stuck at 114 if you buy this weeks helmet.

      • mwhite5471 .

Wrong…you can upgrade any armor as many times as you want.

You will still need the glimmer and shard though.

    • HectorSanchez957

Not this week. There are weeks where Xur has the upgrade available for that gear. Just check in every week and see if he’s selling for the particular gear you’re looking to reroll.

      • JC

I just saw that today Xur has the upgrade available for the helmet. Does this mean that if i purchase the upgrade i get the max stats? thx

        • Ian Feagins

No, it doesn’t. Pay attention to the stats that the updated (certainly a better word than upgraded) helmet has. I believe that this week the Third Man update has a roll of 97/104 Intellect, compared to last week’s 112/122, and the week before’s 115/127.

Also compared to the Mask actually being sold today, which has 93/100 Intellect, as stated above.

All of these rolls are static and will only change if you update the Mask again, and only if he’s updating it again next week with a different stat roll.

EDIT: Updating armor and weapons is also a very expensive process that requires you to spend a certain amount of Glimmer (no less than 7,000) and an Exotic Shard, in addition to leveling up the updated item all over again.

        • Sorry I was so late responding (and Xur’s gone now) but no it doesn’t mean you get max stats. You have to look up online what the max stats for the helmet actually are. Then you see what Xur’s selling. So if the max stats are Intellect +160 and Xur’s upgraded helmet comes out to Intellect +155 then you know you’ve got a really good roll. On the other hand if he’s selling the helmet upgrade with Intellect +125 then you know it’s not a good roll because of how far off the maximum it is.

Hope that clears things up for future reference. Just remember when you upgrade the gear it resets all of its progress so you’ll have to level the whole thing up again.

  • Jason Peterson

Hard Light was mediocre before the auto rifle nerf, now it’s just not worth using (like just about all auto rifles now) at all.

Sucks that thing weeks gear has such bad stat rolls.

  • shazam iam

    Another week, another no-Gallahorn…

–I kill Crota every week on normal and hard twice since DLC
–I grab the exotic chest on hard and kill atheon every week twice since October

–I do the nightfall every week twice.

I get coins, shards, sparrows, spaceships and the last word every week.

I havent gotten soros, vex, crux, the 4th horseman, or thunderlord.

Can we please get rid of RNG and make it so you can buy the stuff from boss tokens when you kill them?

    • SGT_Pannenkoek

I understand your suffering. I’m trying to get The Word of Crota but all i get is That stupid raid helmet! just keep trying and you will get your stuff 🙂

      • oth3rwhit3m3at

I would trade you my 4 Words of Crota, for one Raid helmet or a black hammer. 🙁

        • SGT_Pannenkoek

Hahah, I got like 4 raid helmets, 2 black hammers and 4 Hunger of Crota’s. I just need the sword breaker and light in the abyss and Word of Crota, but crota is a bitch 🙁

      • shazam iam

Thank God I finally got a hunger of crota 2 weeks ago. At least I don’t have to BEG to do HM Crota anymore.

        • SGT_Pannenkoek

Yea, I know exactly what you mean! If there’s some random dude with a maxed out gjallie they just kick you and let him join 🙁

          • Caleb Streat

That’s the opposite for me. I got Word of Crota on my first run and I need the raid helmet to get to 32.

    • Ian Feagins

The more you complain, the stingier RNG gets. Just calm yourself and exercise some (more?) patience, and congratulate others when they get what they need.

It may not actually make the weapon(s) you want drop, but it’ll certainly ease the pain of waiting.

      • shazam iam

LOL, I never cared what I got until I couldn’t get groups because of it. RNG ruins the game.

        • NLK3

          RNG ruins ALL games.

I WANT TRADING!!! (And before anybody talks about how “other games did it wrong/bad”, be creative and just THINK)

    • NeverTheOne

I sincerely, truly feel your pain…and it’s what led me to stop jammin’ Destiny altogether…well, that and the fact that there are lots of other games worth my time recently.

    • NLK3

I’m still mission Monte Carlo, Thunderlord, 4th Horseman, and Necrochasm. At least you got time to do all of that. I haven’t beaten Crota but thrice (normal 2, hard 1). Hardlight and 3 Vex were the only exotics VOG got me. Nothing from chests since I started both raids in October besides the Titan mark.

  • Bok Choy

I enjoy Hard Light despite the bad things everyone says about it. I love the look and the deep sound of each fire.

  • Andrew

Please don’t give out incorrect information. As of now, the maximum single stat on a helmet is 128. (Obsidian Mind can roll as high as 73 in either or both of its stats.)

    • The min/max values in our DB are directly from Bungie

  • Ian Feagins

And here I said he wasn’t gonna sell Hard Light. Funny thing, that. Still won’t see Thunderlord for awhile, if ever.

Kind of annoyed that Xur decided to sell the Mask after I finally got it from an engram last week, but hey, now less people are going to have to wait for RNG to stop being a total wad and give it to them.

  • Charles Burch

Hardlight is my favorite autorifle. It works great for me for ROC Strikes and Public Events. I got Hard Light and Thunderlord as engram drops.

  • Should I get that Mask of the Third Man? I finally got my Warlock to 32, and I’m wanting to start a Hunter next. I have 15 SCs…if I don’t get it from the Helmet Engram (I managed to get my Apotheosis Veil that way when Icebreaker was last sold).

    • Charles Burch

I would have started 3 guardians sooner. That way they could be running the weekly heroic for 6-9 SC. Each week 6 SC x three guardians = 18SC. Or 9 SC x 3 =27SC per week. I have been having strange luck with Exotic engrams. They tend to never be for the correct guardian. My Titan now has 4 Exotic Helmets while my Warlock has none. The hunter can not use the helmet until level 20. Since you are low on coins I would save it for when Xur has weapons you want.

      • I had a late start to the game overall; I got my 360 copy just before this past Christmas. My work keeps me busy, so I didn’t have the time to work out 3 different characters simultaneously; many of my weeknights were spent grinding just to get my Warlock where he is now.
Believe me, I know people who run Nightfall 3 times/week, and maybe when I get this Hunter up to speed, that will help. And yes, I am aware that Exotic armor can’t be equipped until Level 20; I went through that with this Warlock. I also have “Don’t Touch Me” from a Xur Engram that will also have to wait.
Speaking of…last week, when Xur was selling “An Insurmountable Skullfort,” I bought the helmet Engram. What did I get? “An Insurmountable Skullfort.” So, whenever I get around to starting up my Titan, he’ll have that. And “The Armamentarium.” And all the other Legendary Gear I have in my vault.
So yeah…I’ll get there when I get there. [=

    • Linnes16

If you’re gonna do a hunter definitely get it. That and the Achlyophage Symbiote are great for the hunter class.

      • *looks up Symbiote* Wow, that does sound useful. Thanks!

        • Ha-ha, and wouldn’t you know? I DID get it from the Exotic Helmet Engram! AND with a higher Intellect stat! I guess I will save those coins, after all.

  • Fenrir

Hello Mr ryan, could you do a review of the iron banner weapons? Your reviews aleays helps me in what perks are the best. greetings

  • Orange_Caboose

This weekly post should review the upgrades as well.

The Crest of the Alpha Lupi reroll this week has an insanely good 162 Intellect roll. You should spend the 7000 glimmer and a shard and upgrade your existing one.

  • Alex

Apotheosis is a great helm in CE!

  • Undeadluke92

3 months of waiting and not playing are finally over … HARD LIGHT! YOU ARE MINE! !!

  • NLK3

Can’t wait for Thunderlord. Thing about Hardlight I learned is that skip rounds don’t ricochet less than 90*, but if you shoot through them with Hardlight, it’ll bounce back at around 10*, seemingly on any surface instead of perpendicular shots to the wall (|_ angles, instead of /_ or _ angles shots, for those who failed geometry). Sadly, I heard that the shots would damage them again after going through them, but they don’t. Same damage whether the shots ricochet back at me or shot through to an infinite background. The armor-piercing effect is good on an autorifle, since Vex and Hive like to block each other, and Vex don’t move that fast.

  • Kenshiro Genjuro

Speaking of Hardlight, I’ve been pretty surprised by the number of people that expressed envy knowing I had it. Guess they don’t have to anymore now, but I didn’t understand it. I can understand it for Thunderlord, Thorn, or Hawkmoon, and can only imagine how it must be for Gjallahorn owners. But Hardlight seems to have a little bit of a fan following. Monte Carlo too. Given they’re more quirky than utilitarian, it just strikes me as funny. Other exotics like Truth, Pocket Infinity, or Plan C almost seem resented even though they all have a lot of utility.

Still think Hardlight doesn’t make sense without arc burn.

    • XEGtechnomancer

It seems that xur not selling something is one of the catalysts for the communities desire for something.
