Exotic Buffs – Destiny Update

1.1 : The one about Exotics. And the Raid!

Today’s patch includes the long-awaited arrival of Exotics weapon buffs, additional acquisition paths for destination upgrade materials, along with additional changes to exotic gear node upgrading in preparation for the soon-to-be-released expansion, The Dark Below.

We’re also correcting issues induced by our more recent update to the Raid.



Exotic Weapons are designed to look, feel, and sound overpowered. At the same time, they are not supposed to break the balance of the game.

We hope these weapons challenge the way players think about their loadouts. Exotics will be a constant work in-progress!


In preparation for the Dark Below, Exotic Armor and Weapons no longer require Ascendant Materials to upgrade.

exotic shard upgrade

The final upgrade node of all Exotic Gear will require an Exotic Shard

Exotic Shards can be obtained by one of the following means:

  • Dismantling unwanted Exotics
  • Purchased from Xur for 7 Strange Coins

Exotics now start at a higher base Attack value (274) and have a narrowed upgrade range to compensate.


thorn 9 magazine

  • Projectiles now briefly highlight targets on impact
  • Mark of the Devourer DoT (damage-over-time) upgrade increased against PvE enemy targets
  • Reload Speed increased
  • Magazine Size increased
  • Ammo inventory size increased
  • Stability and Weapon Handling increased

Bad Juju

  • Magazine Size increased to 8 bursts (was 5)
  • Ammo inventory size increased
  • String of Curses now also decreases the cooldown of your Super on kill
  • Adjusted effects to not block first person reticle

Hard Light

  • Stability increased
  • Perfect Balance upgrade replaced by Fitted Stock (increases maximum possible weapon Stability)

Suros Regime

  • Lowered total damage at the end of the mag on SUROS Regime upgrade to be more in line with the Glass Half Full perk on Legendary Auto Rifles

Monte Carlo

  • Stability increased
  • Range slightly decreased
  • Monte Carlo Method upgrade now also has a chance to fully charge melee ability on kill

MIDA Multi-Tool

  • MIDA rounds now have increased knockback against targets in both PvE and PvP


  • Send It upgrade (which was redundant) replaced by Speed Reload

Red Death

  • Rate of Fire increased slightly, but Burst Damage reduced to compensate

Plan C

  • Weapon Handling speed increased
  • Player Speed increased while Plan C is in hand

Pocket Infinity

  • Speed Reload upgrade replaced by Extended Clip which allows the option to increase magazine size (5 bursts)

Vex Mythoclast

  • Attack Power increased to 323 (from 300)

  • Base Damage increased, fixing bug we introduced in previous patch
  • Enhanced Battery upgrade by Extended Mag (this change still allows for a significant upgrade to Magazine Size, but less than before)


  • Reload Speed increased significantly, auto fires slightly slower

Ice Breaker

  • Send It upgrade replaced by Lightweight (which was redundant as Icebreaker already had maximum range)
  • New effects for enemies killed by Ice Breaker upgrade

Patience and Time

  • Snapshot upgrade replaced by Custom Optics (provides a lower zoom option)

Super Good Advice

  • Stability increased


  • Magazine Size increased to 3 (was 1)



  • Fixed an issue we introduced in a previous patch, in which Atheon did not correctly send 3 players through the time gates
  • Fixed an exploit where the Templar could be forced off its platform

Daily Heroic Story

  • Destination Materials now drop from completing the Daily Heroic


  • Removed the ‘Relic Hunter’ Bounty
  • Destination Materials now drop from completing the Daily Patrol Bounty


  • Reduced Cryptarch reputation gain from Engrams, but reputation reward packages now have an increased chance for Legendary Engrams
  • Players will now be able to use Vanguard Marks and Crucible Marks to purchase Spinmetal, Relic Iron, Spirit Bloom, and Helium Filaments from the Vanguard and Crucible Quartermasters in the Tower
  • Xur now sells a new material, Exotic Shards, to upgrade the final node of Exotics for 7 Strange Coins
  • Faction Class Items (ex: FWC Cloak, Dead Orbit Mark, etc.) are now replaced by Faction Emblems in the rank-up reward packages from Faction Vendors


  • Networking fixes, which should reduce the instance of the Bee family of KTOs
  • Fixed an issue in which using Xbox One party chat induced a slower frame rate

    Overall a good update i think. I like this part:
    Players will now be able to use Vanguard Marks and Crucible Marks to purchase Spinmetal, Relic Iron, Spirit Bloom, and Helium Filaments from the Vanguard and Crucible Quartermasters in the Tower
    This is great in my opinion ^^. What I not like that much is the fixed templar XD it was so much faster pushing him of the cliff.

      Alert alert. It still sucks ass. Vex mythoclast vs vision of confluence. Vision of confluence wins. I have both maxed and vision of confluence does way more damage, better range and accuracy. Shoots a little bit slower than the mythoclast, but VoC has better time to kill. And doesn’t run out of ammo in .2 seconds. And compared to the fatebringer…well lets just say the vex shootspins compared to it. It needs to feel like the best weapon in the game because its the hardest weapon to get in the game. I assure you, it does not feel like the best weapon in the game.

        Highly agree with christian, upgrade was more like a nerf, dmg still sucks and WAAAY lower mag size, it is even worse piece of crap of an “end game weapon” than it was before

    Bungie says, “You may need to close and restart the Destiny application on your console to apply the update.”

      Same here! THIS is a game changing update… so much less time I’ll spend running in circles on the planets… thank Jesus. Vanguard/Crucible marks are overrated once you start earning raid weapons and exotic weapons anyways.

    • It’s still a great auto rifle. And they said they were going to nerf it a long time ago, so this shouldn’t have been a surprise.

  • Time to redo your Bad Juju review. =) It’s pretty damn amazing now. String of Curses is the key. The bonus to super energy is amazing, and the 8 burst rounds over 5 makes a big difference. On my Voidwalker doing bounties on Venus, I had a hard time using my Super all the times it was up without feeling like I was wasting it on just a few enemies.

    Edit: I realize you need to redo all the reviews. Just Bad Juju is the biggest change.

    Is Bad Juju’s impact nerfed now? I remember it being an impact of 10 but now planet destiny says 7. I’m just not sure if this is an upgrade over my really nice legendary scout rifle. I have to pick this or the pocket infinity for my exotic quest and I’m not sure.

    The just returned the pocket infinity perk they removed around 2 months ago, and now all my exotics will be near maxed with no ascended materials needed, anyone know how many shards you get for dismantling exotics?

    The buff to Bad Juju is amazing! Already was one of the best PvE weapons in the game, now it is the best. I rarely needed to reload in the past. This also made SGO usable, but I don’t see it happening.

    The weapon I am the most curious about is the Thorn, how effective are the new changes. With it’s 4 bullets mag the Invective still doesn’t attract me.

    Good thing the Templar is fixed.

    Good thing material can be awarded but Man, 10 Marks for 20 materials ??? That’s way too expensive ! It takes more time to do 2 strikes than farming for it ?

    What is the “Relic Bounty” (Sorry, play in French…) ?

    I would have liked more chance to get legendary from Rare Engrams than better chance to get Legendary over a package. The big problem is your first char, once you have a legendary set you’re going for LvL30/32 Gear and LvL20 Outfit is no use. Ok for weapons, not so much for Armor.

      Relic bounty is when you have to collect 200 impact shards on the moon, which you get from killing enemies on that planet.

        Oh ok thank you 🙂 Too bad it was nice to do it while doing other bounties and farming. It is strange that Bungie is redirecting us from a so called open world to a “rail” FPS. It seems wondering on planets is not part of their plans…

      I saw elsewhere that it now holds 9 in the chamber, that’s as far as I know.

    Must admit I am a little disappointed with the ‘buffs’ to the exotics. Some are very obviously needed tweaks to the handling and usability of the weapons but I do think that overall these are still nothing particularly special.

    Level 20 Rare (blue) weapons can only reach a maximum attack rating of 242. Legendaries are nearly 25% higher at 300 – exactly the same as Exotics are. I had hoped that all would be buffed to maybe 350 (around 17% higher) especially as you can only equip 1 at a time with the Vex Mythoclast being higher again (400 maybe) instead of the 323 (less than 10% better) than it has had. Its also had its enhanced battery clip size reduced too.

    I now its made weapons like Bad Juju, Pocket Infinity and Thorn more viable now but they are still no more viable or impressive than Legendaries – still Exotic in a quirky way rather than a step up. Its a step in the right direction but still think it is not the necessary and much needed buff to separate these from Legendary equivalents.

    Both Suros and Red Death have been nerfed too in this update – not that I use these any more due to Raid Legendaries being better. I still think Visions of Confluence is better than the Vex post-patch

    Looking at the attack stats of the upcoming exotics, these are going to be totally eclipsed by them – Dragons Breath has a base attack of 302 upgradeable to 331 according to the imagery

    So now who do I sell my excess materials to? I was selling them to the crucible vendor to earn Rep/marks without having to endure the PvP – certainly don’t need to buy these things that I can get free in about 10 mins of doing ANY activity! Can’t believe Bungie think that they can be classified as a ‘reward’ either! Ridiculous

        oh here let me just spend 30 marks for 60 materials and then use those materials for xp, oh wait i still have 170 crucible marks and 200 vanguard marks to spend. awesome. yeah. this is why they took that option out. you win some, you looose some.

          I know it doesn’t work like that but its really NOT difficult to get materials. I get LOTS just while doing bounties and activities. Its not difficult to find them and the loot chests too. Now they also ‘reward’ them doing daily missions too so even less reason to buy!

            Indeed. I have over 330 motes of light in my vault and nothing to use them on. I suppose I could buy Exotic Engrams from Xur to break down and get the new Shards to upgrade my other exotics. I also Have over 175 Strange coins though so not exactly difficult to buy them either. That’s before I do this weeks Heroics too…
            I have at least 100 of every material on each character anyway, I never let it drop below that and sold anything over 200 (as it takes up an extra slot) to the Crucible for rep/marks without actually having to endure that. Now what am I going to do with the excess – I don’t have room in my vault!!

            So have I… I still have NO issue collecting resources. I often manage to get more than enough just completing bounties – even easier now as they are also rewarded for completing these along with the daily mission

            Space is now a far bigger issue as every block of 200 takes up a new slot and as my Vault is full and we can no longer sell our excess this is going to be a bigger issue for me.

    Dammit the Regime got nerfed again? What about making your exotic feel exotic? It makes no sense to keep lowering its effectiveness in PvE, it was already feeling meh, I’ve been using VoC way more these days and now it’s probably just going to collect dust in my vault. Thanks for killing my favourite weapon Bungie.

        I’m sure I hadn’t completed one before the update. I went back and did a second one just to make sure I didn’t accidentally only get 2 tiered on the first one and still no bonus. That will seriously slow me down leveling up the armor!

    Wow! i was one shard off fully leveling my exotic chest armor and did shit for three days trying to get it and now they change it. I better not now have to buy these exotic shards. And with destiny offline i can’t even check to see if i got screwed. all i needed was one shard which i might have gotten from a daily public event.

      if you have any exotics you don’t want laying around then you can dismantle them to get those shards and the shards are the same for weapons and armor

    Wow! I’m very, very impressed! I didn’t expect so much to be done. Even Pocket infinity has 5 round now! Yes!

    Thorn is now outstanding, they did so much more than I expected, JuJu has exactly what it needed and so much more. I’m very surprised, and very impressed with these changes. Even the nerfing is well justfied. Well done Bungie. Keep it up!

    Thorn – uber change. Legendary stats now, with the option of sendit or perfect balance. On par with Hawkmoon and the highest range legendary at the moment
    Mida – really needs increased impact. Miss one of the 4 headshots and can’t compete. A buff is a buff tho.
    Red Death – In pvp it was a 2 head 3 body shot weapon. Now it takes 1 more shot to kill. The RoF is not enough to compensate.
    Pocket Infinity – Nice option to have a bigger magazine, firest 7-8 in auto. Without the stability it’s hard to control though.
    Patience and time – easier to use in pvp now with the Ice Breaker like scope.
    Invective – RoF change is Ok because control is easier. Reload change is nice.
    Super Good Advice – Viable now
    Bad Juju – so much better for pve now. Viable for pvp
    Suros – can’t tell the difference
    Hard Light & Monte Carlo – nice change, viable now
    Hawkmoon – depending on preferance may be considered a nerf, I like sendit too much not to call it a nerf (or balancing)
    Plan C – a buff is a buff
    Icebreaker – not a buff I care for
    Trufh – needed buff

    All the exotic fixes seemed great, all except the suros regime nerf. Why would they want it to be more in line with the glass half full perk like with legendaries when they were just talking about making exotics feel more exotic?? The Suros Regime perk wasn’t nearly as much of a game breaker as the vex 1.0 was, especially in normal crucible, it was a retarded nerf on their part, it wasn’t too powerful nor too weak

    IMO, the Universal Remote should be buffed. The reload is incredibly slow, and I think if you scope in it should shoot slug rounds instead of increased range. The range is useless because the spread of the pellets…

    Vex Mythoclast still sucks compared to most other exotics. I have it maxed and it most certainly disappoints.

    Wow. If nobody noticed. Pocket Infinity went from the Slowest charge rate in the game, to instant charge!

  • I have used the Vex Mythoclast post-patch and this gun is now amazing… When doing the higher level missions (28+) This weapon owns everything and leaves it all in a blaze of fire. When shooting up low level mobs, VoC is better. But when you take on the high level missions the Vex is your go to weapon. As Bungie already predicted, start the new raid of with your Vex!
