The Story Behind Eris Morn

While many of the missions that Eris gives you are seemingly cut and dry, there is much that she doesn’t tell you.

The story of Eris begins before your own, when many Guardians attempted to reclaim the Moon only to face the full wrath of Crota, the Son of Oryx. Eris, a veteran of the horrific battle of the Twilight Gap, tried to kill Crota with her fireteam.

Eris Morn and her team went down into Crota’s lair by way of the Temple of Crota.

Humanity chose to give up the Moon to the Hive, and many of Eris’ fireteam members fell to the Hive commanders.

ascendant sword eris lore

A Titan named Vell Tarlowe was killed and his Ghost was taken by the Wizard Verok.

Sai Mota, the Hunter of the fireteam, was killed by Omnigul while trying to escape using the bones of Acolytes she felled.

Omar Agah was essentially tortured by the Heart of Crota, screaming as his Light was used to feed the freshly spawned Hive.

Eriana-3, the Warlock, discovered the name of Crota after torturing and interrogating a Wizard, and while her fate is never explicitly stated, it is assumed that she died in an act of bravery, attempting to avenge the Guardians that fell.

For years, Eris wandered around in the darkness, and has returned to the Tower despite the Speaker and Commander Zavala distrusting her, thinking that she has been corrupted.

Toland the Shattered taught Eris how to survive among the Hive, and while he sought to end the Hive as much as any other Guardian, he also had an intense desire to learn from them.

The song is death. To hear it is to die. To know the words is mortal. Oh, good point, Eriana, death is just a word, isn’t it? A catch-all term for the failure to go on, nothing spiritual, nothing with its own quiddity. We all died once, and it did not prove insurmountable.

Perhaps they know a way to make themselves part of the song, part of something vast and burning that rots and peels into ash but never ever ends. Perhaps She has engineered this for Him, and pinned His power up against the quiddity of death itself.

I am so terribly curious to know.

Ikora Rey shares none of her comrade’s concerns though, as Eris is one of her Hidden, a group of Guardians who infiltrate enemy strongholds to obtain information for the Warlocks.

This time, Eris returns to bring word that the Hive intend to take Earth, with Omnigul leading the Hive by attempting to take Rasputin, the last Warmind who sacrificed much of humanity in the Golden Age to preserve what he can.

Unfortunately, Rasputin is less than cooperative with what is left of humanity, yet he still fights to protect it. As such, Eris tells you to go through and dismantle much of the Hive’s command on Earth through her missions, culminating in you eventually killing Omnigul herself.

destiny dark below lore

Eris tasks brave Guardians to taint a Hive ritual to an even higher god of the Hive, Oryx. As such, Ikora ponders whether Crota is merely the youngest in the Hive pantheon or whether he is the very apex of Hive power.

Although Crota’s presence siphons Light, Guardians are able to use the Chalice of Light and use the dying Light of Eris Morn’s dead compatriots (Eriana, Omar, Sai, Vell, and Toland) to overpower Crota.

Crota represents a distinct class of Hive entities, not resident in our material world. Crota’s ‘home’ is a universe created or remade by his power and occupied by Hive organisms of immense age.

Ikora believes that the realm that Crota resides in, and the Hive that inhabit it, are incredibly old. There is the possibility that the Vex gate systems and such Hive dimensions are related to each other.

The nature and possible interrelationship of the Vex gate system with Hive netherworlds remains unexplored.

Now if they’d only put this in the game…

Uhm…they didn’t fail to kill Crota…Crota was killed by them (why else would they need to resurrect him)? They were just unable to destroy his soul, because his servants snatched it away.

I think they meant they failed to Kill his soul (like you say). Makes sense that way, it just wasn’t phrased as so.

I love this. Adding this sort of content directly into the game would be a great move. I Think bungie is very aware that adding this all into the main mission would bore every casual player who has ever tried destiny. But this sort of thing should have its own cinematic or interactive dynamic inside the game. Similar to how Halo uses terminals. I’m surprised bungie didn’t reuse this concept, it’s much needed in a game like Destiny.

Nothing the less, I know that all of this mass fan complaining will motivate Bungie to reforge Destinys image with the next title. They are one of few developers that will rework big parts of the game just because people complain about it constantly. But as it stands, people will never ever be satisfied. When Bungie reworks features or adds things in for free people will always say things like “should have been added since launch”. Bungie have done great so far and I can’t wait to see what they pull together next, whiny players or not.

Once again why is none of this in the effing game?

poor eris didnt know how to glitch the game…. she gave her life to see some stupid guardians glitching the game and ripping crota of his soul

  • Lara Croft

I thought Bungie learned their mistake and put this in the game…… but NO. I hope the 2nd DLC will have a MUCH better narrative. BTW Xur will be staying till Monday. Due to the PSN/XLive outage.

Crota is the easiest part of the raid, those of you cheesing, it probably takes longer to reconnect the party leader than it does to kill him legit. just saying…

I can’t tell if disqus is acting up or if my comments are being deleted. Odd. Does this site have a “no referring to reddit” policy or something? :p

It’s Disqus… it happened to me a lot, it doesn’t show you your own comments but people can see them.

If any of you did not know, the reason most of this is not in the game is because it was made after the game was completed. Infact that is why the game is so lacking in story, they lost their lead writer before the game was released but after all the game mechanics and designs were finalized. I am not sure on the full details but because the writer left everything had to be changed as far as the story was concerned. So stuff like this was made after the fact. As to why they did not simply start over well that has to do with the producer Activision, Bungie had a deadline to meet and well Activision is well Activision and they want their money so sacrifices had to be made to meet that deadline. Personally I expect much better out of their next game and even though what we got was so choppy I am still enjoying it allot.

Nope most of the aliens andcstoryline are from acient folklore left behind by ancient civilzatiins and there hyrogliphics…ires morn is a true folklore store..she had a third eye and ancient idian culture have depicted her in many temples therecwritings there war a great war in the skies and even greek mytholigy called her the goddes of war or chaos..there was supposedly a body re overed on the moon in an unofficial apollo 20 mission in the seventies was a female looked half alien half indian or asian ..and yes she had something in the middle of her forhead like a third eye ..she was preserved in ..its all based on folklore but watch aliens on the moon and listen to the testimony of thesee people and you decide if eris indeed was ancient worrior on a galactic scale

When you target a 12+ audience for a prosperous 10 year future, no wonder none of this is in the actual f**king game, nor will it ever be. Maybe in Destin 2. Or 4. When those 12+ are a bit older and can handle more complex stuff.

The reason that this part of the story is not in the game is because the story of eris is more original than the game itself.. and is legendary and folklore …research the moon and its past inhabitants determine the truth for yourself wether the acient folk tales of the indian goddess is true…whats stricking to me is she also has the third eye like indian folklore depict and so did the female body that they supposedly found on the moon during the apollo 20 mission that never happened…do more research and I think youll find the real story of eris morn or what ever here name realy was …wacth aliens on the moon the truth undiscloed on netflix may not be fact or who knows butvthere are stricking similarities to the objects the are finding and the female body supposedly recovered…have fun with ..
