Bungie Answers Community Questions

Published on: Mar 1, 2015 @ 3:24

Earlier this week Bungie had an “open house” to shed some light on some topics that the community has been concerned about.

They talked about No Land Beyond, The 4th Horseman, Necrochasm, Third Eye in Inferno, PvP gametypes/rewards, and a lot more.

Q & A

Below you’ll find most of the questions that Bungie answered, the rest can be found in the Feedback forum.

Q: Just wondering how we’ll be able to get our current exotics weapons up to the new damage cap when House of Wolves comes out? Will it be the same system as The Dark Below?

A: It will not be the same system and we’ll splain this in detail before we drop House of Wolves so you know all the nitty gritty details.

Q: […] my concern is that some of the exotic weapons aren’t receiving the love they deserve. A quick reference to this would be the universal remote or the no land beyond and some of the less used exotics.

A: You unknowingly touched on a very tricky part of making exotic guns. They need to be unique AND useful. Unique implies different and special. Useful implies accessible and understandable to many players. Some exotics do this well and some leave players wanting a little bit more.

I will never forget an interaction I had with a co-worker during the first exotic patch. He was lamenting Thorn, he didn’t like the slow reload or the shallow 6 round magazine. This was addressed in the patch. We have it 9 rounds and a faster reload. The day after the patch went live, he sadly told me he thought Thorn had lost its character. Even though it got better and we had addressed his pain point, his fantasy of what made Thorn unique was reduced.

We’ll continue to try and find the right balance for all the exotic guns. We know they’re special. We consider them important items in the Destiny world and they will always be looked at for future patches.

no land beyond buff

Q: Buff No Land Beyond… it’s the most useless Exotic ever

A: No Land Beyond was built with a very specific play style in mind: Fast sniping, run and gun, quick scope precision shots at close range. It is primarily a PVP play style, and we wanted to give players who like this style a weapon that suits their skillset.

Admittedly, the weapon is not very forgiving to players who aren’t already acclimated to playing like this. They’ll probably die, a lot, trying to get consistent headshots in the crucible. Dying over and over isn’t fun.

The question we need to ask in future exotic weapon patches is how much more accessible we want this weapon to be. Did we go too far in creating a niche weapon that only a few people enjoy? If we did, is that OK? Can we make it easier to use? If we did, would that turn The Crucible into a non stop No Land Beyond headshot murder fest? At surface level there are definitely things we can do to make NLB better (you have some great suggestions), but we also need to consider the wake that could incur if everyone had a super sweet one shot kill weapon in their primary slot in The Crucible.

We will definitely continue to listen to feedback and when it comes time to do another exotic weapon update, I’m sure we’ll look closely at No Land Beyond.

Q: Can we please get an explanation as to why we cant separate PvP and PvE for weapon buffs/nerfs/stats in general.

A: The goal in Destiny is to allow you to make a character and have that character transcend all activities and modes. We want you to play a little bit of everything, find your favorite toys and be able to use those toys, as is, all over the game.

We also want to make sure that Destiny always feels like Destiny regardless of the mode that you prefer to play in. We want PvP players to be able to have real conversations with their PvE player friends about the various items in the game.

As with the Shotgun change this week, we do make changes where we feel like they will make a significant impact and modify where the game isn’t playing as desired.

Q: Why does hunter throwing knife not 1 shot, while shoulder charge does?

A: TK has a longer range and keeps you out of harms way. Also, SC is a bonus and is not the Titan’s melee upgrade.

the 4th horseman nerf accident

Q: Why did The 4th Horseman’s rate of fire get lowered?

A: […] We playtested the proper things, but an issue occurred before the weapon made it out of the building and the stats HAVE been incorrectly modified. We will work on getting the weapon restored to its former glory ASAP.

Q: […] right now we have control, team death match 6v6, 3v3 and Everyman for themselves. It’s a bit redundant with no new games. Do you plan on adding any more?

A: YES! For Destiny’s launch, we focused on delivering a small set of solid gametypes that we believed in. Stay tuned.

Q: Can Inferno be a permanent playlist?

A: There’s always a possibility that it could be permanent, depending on how you all react to it. We want to stay fluid, and keep the option open.

The advantage of debuting modes like Inferno in the rotating playlists are, among other reasons, the bigger the population, the better the match-making. Having mode variants leave and come back from time to time raises the overall quality of the experience for everybody. If we see big enough consistent numbers of players over a long enough time line, that opens the conversation of finding a more permanent home for mods like these.

In the future, we want a healthy ecosystem of modes that balances playlist quantity with quality, as it gives us the most room to make new, awesome stuff. But, community feedback on what modes & variants you want to see in Destiny will always be super helpful to us.

necrochasm buff

Q: Many think the Necrochasm is under powered considering how hard it can be to get. Is everyone using it wrong? Will it get a buff?

A: We are definitely aware of the feedback coming in about the Necrochasm.

No, you’re not using it wrong. 🙂 The weapon is performing as designed. Fictionally I love the weapon, and as an exotic gun I believe it definitely achieved our goal of being a unique item unlike anything else in the game. However, I do agree that competitively it is not as strong as Mythoclast or other highly used Auto Rifles. The acquisition of this weapon was also significantly more involved than other exotics.

We did a huge pass on exotic weapons shortly after Destiny released, and will likely do more updates like this in the future. Community feedback is taken into heavy consideration when we make these updates, so I’m sure we’ll be looking closely at Necrochasm when that time comes. Until then, thanks for letting us know how you feel and keep it coming.

Q: Will We Ever Get True Objective Modes?

A: Maybe someday! The real answer is that our initial collection of gametypes were designed to promote teamwork without putting undue pressure on any one player. There’s no way for one player to “lose the game” instantly the way a bad flag-runner can in CTF. As Destiny evolves, we will add more complexity/variety in our gametypes as we see fit.

third eye inferno

Q: Why can’t all of the game modes (like doubles and salvage) be playable at all times?

A: If you’re asking why our new playlists are short-time events, our goal is two-fold: make sure we always have a great matchmaking experience and test out new things in a limited way to see if people like them. As far as variety goes, we’re totally working on it. Inferno is coming on Tuesday, and expect more things in the future.

Q: Third Eye Perk in Inferno, Doesn’t inferno mode render this perk completely useless?

A: Just like gear that helps you revive faster in Skirmish isn’t useful in Clash, Third Eye Perks & Knucklehead aren’t useful in Inferno modes.

It’s a very serious priority to us that we respect the time you poured into the game to acquire bad ass gear & abilities, but its the nature of the game that certain gear and talents will have different levels of effectiveness in different areas of the game.

Q: Why are the crucible rewards so scarce, given at random to the players (seemingly always the worst player), and are more often than not very low quality or of no use?

A: Crucible rewards are on the low side for sure, and issue we intend to address in a future update. The rewards are random to encourage everyone in the game to play it to completion, rather than only the “winners” staying.

destiny inferno permanent

Q: Can you talk more about the design intentions for Control in the Crucible and offer insight on the development of the game-type?

A: Control was designed as a light-objective layer on top of a basic deathmatch foundation. Players who want to just kill and ignore their team can do that. Players who aren’t as confident in their thumbskill can run bases and help out their team just by capturing zones. That’s the basics.

We wanted players to start out in Control because it’s super-fun and very “Destiny”, and keeps players near obvious locations so anyone can follow waypoints to find a fight.

Q: Will we ever see Iron Banner applied to more than just Control?

A: That’s something we’re talking about internally.

bungie no land beyond buff

Q: I think Blink makes Shotguns overpowered in PvP. What’s the sandbox team’s thoughts on Blink Shotgun?

A: The way weapons and abilities collide with other weapons and abilities is always being looked at. Blink is sweet. Shotguns are sweet. Together they are super sweet. We know this. This play style helped us settle on shotgun range values for the 1.1.1 patch. And I should be clear that I’m NOT saying “1.1.1 shotguns make blink & shotgun more balanced”. 🙂 But I do think the range change helps in this case.

Blink is also not necessarily an easy play style out of the box. People who are good at it, are GOOD AT IT, and are probably just as lethal with other non-blink movement modes.

We will definitely continue to monitor this, and any other interesting power spikes that come from weapon and ability combinations.

Q: What does Rodeo do?

A: Rodeo pushes the weapon recoil to kick more straight up the middle than to either side.

You want to make Destiny an all around game, but you only talk about/deal with crucible complaints. Seriously. Some people really, REALLY dislike crucible play. Quit catering to the PvP people only.

    • Fluttershy

They said this Q&A was being answered by Cruicible devs.

    • Edwin

Maybe complaining is more in the pvp-players nature? 🙂 :p

    • WSquared88

Bungie has stated that the talk with the PvE designers will come later.

    • Random Guardian

Though these are the pvp devs talking, it does seem like they focus on pvp more then pve. I hate pvp. I have stopped playing after the last patch because there isn’t anything left to do. I have 3 32s and every exotic. Can’t wait to see what the pve devs will say when we get to ask them. I bet the answers will be “Oh, your bored? Go play pvp”

    • I hate PvP

It’s not the weapons, it’s the crap connections and netcode. Fix that, and stop messing with our weapons.

  • Riley Hall

    No comments regarding queens wrath?

    • Jamew

This was a PVP only Q&A. I’m sure they’ll do one for PvE. The devs here are Crucible only.

  • Fluttershy

Thank god. I will be beyond happy when they update Crucible rewards.

  • TheRedStorm

wanna know what I want in Destiny? More than one player on each console! Do you know how much more fun the crucible will be???

    • Edwin

Couch coop/splitscreen is the #1 thing I miss in Destiny.

Borderlands always was my goto game for this but since I got the X1 it feels wrong to hookup the old 360 😉

    • WSquared88

The reason that that doesn’t exist in Destiny is because Bungie made the game for both last gen and this gen. The way that the game was made can’t support splitscreen on the last gen consoles because it is too intensive for them to handle. If not everyone can have it then no one can have it. If Destiny 2 is made only for this gen console then it will most likely has splitscreen.

      • NLK3

What does that mean? the PS3 and 360 has games with splitscreen, so what does it mean for it to be too intensive if it has been done before? It sucks when my brother and I have our own accounts, but can’t play with each other. Maybe they need to find a way to make it available than just saying “fuck it”. Co-op with an actual friend is better than with some stranger you don’t know.

        • WSquared88

Destiny was made for the next generation of consoles. This means that they use the stronger and faster capabilities of those consoles when making and running the game to add extra features and cooler things. When they bring the game back down to last gen the game that would have been played no sweat on this gen would struggle to play the same game because last gens consoles aren’t as fast. This requires Bungie to cut out some features to make sure that it runs smoothly. Also all versions of the game need to be the same. If the last gen consoles can’t handle having splitscreen because the game was made to run on faster consoles then none of the versions of the game will have splitscreen. Something had to be cut to get it to run smoothly on last gen consoles and the easiest thing to cut is splitscreen.

        • Andrew

It means that the game will have many issues loading and there will be lots of lag in split-screen. This is because the game is designed as a single screen game. It needs a lot of processing power to be able to run smoothly, and even then, it doesn’t always run smoothly on the older consoles.

The games that do currently run split-screen on last-gen are games that are not as graphics-intensive or need to load as much as Destiny does.

  • True Radiant Free

Awesome my question is in here! (4th Horseman one)

    • Fenrir

another good question would have been more range for the 4th horseman. I mean…5 range? you almost have to smell the enemy in order to land a good shot.

      • True Radiant Free

Eh let’s just focus on getting it fixed first, plus you can upgrade it using field choke and hand loaded, which doesn’t make it too bad. And when I use it as a Titan, I can go super close and just lift out of there lol

  • Bobby Jennings

    Necrochasm where?

    • Added that in

  • Keith Christmas

His point about Thorn and the “character” of exotic weapons is just silly. They need to be good weapons, because the opportunity cost of using anything but the best exotics (assuming you own them) is so high, subpar ones just sit in your inventory/vault and never get used. Saying you feel like you’ve ruined the character of a weapon by making it usable is just daft.

I’m reminded there of comments made back in the early days of the game about why engrams could drop items of lower quality. They said something like “in playtesting, we found that people liked the mystery and it added character to the cryptarch”. They don’t seem to be able to understand that players just don’t see the game in the way that they do. They’re making the game for us, not for them. Character isn’t desirable when the character is “useless and frustrating”

All that said… I think we might need to give up on the idea of NLB getting a significant buff. It’s obviously built with a specific, high skill pvp playstyle in mind, and whilst I accept that that means I’m likely never gonna personally use it as any more than a novelty weapon for patrols or whatever, I also appreciate it does what it’s intended to. That’s the only bad exotic I’m willing to accept will never be useful for PvE

  • Zeropolis

I’m so sick of reading things like : “blink+shotgun is OP”, “if we buff NLB it will be OP in crucible”…

Crucible is all about nerfing good PvE mechanics and weapons and preventing buffs on bad PvE weapons, I barely play crucible, maybe two matches per month, and I see all these updates about nerfing things that I love (I’m a PvE shotgun lover, but now the range is awfull, It makes using it even more risky.)
I mean.. Nobody cares about having the same conversations for PvE and PvP gamestyles, cause obviously these are two different worlds and you should separate them. Look at the Hard Light, ARs are constantly nerfed mostly because PvP players are complaining about the Suros Regime and others good rare ARs, now what ? The Hard Light performs worse each month !

    • Keith Christmas

Hard Light got screwed worse than probably any other exotic in the patch. Not only did it take the hit on range and damage that all autos suffered, they also toned down overpenetration effects, making it less effective at the kind of close quarters crowd control that was its only real niche.

Which is a real shame. HL was my first ever exotic and I’ve always had a lot of fun with it, but now it’s just not worth using at all.

      • Kenshiro Genjuro

This is sad to read for me too. I have no love for autorifles but Hardlight’s quirky mechanics made it something I enjoyed messing around with in PvE. Eh well…

  • Jrenokid

Thank you I agree about time some one much love!!!!!!!!!

  • CoxEmissary

Why the people don´t ask about new destinations, the new raid, or new subclases?

  • legendaryweeabo

so no one asked for more marks in crucible because 3 for winning is not rewarding at all

  • Fenrir

Hi mr ryan, sorry to bother you. This will be about something different from what the article is about, but could you make a review about felwinter’s lie?

You always do reviews about both weapons of each iron banner, but this time you issed that one, besides, considering that it is the shotgun with the longest range and the new fix, it would be a really interesting review for both pvp and pve.

    Greetings.

    • NLK3

Not the longest range, but the highest impact. I have shotguns without rangefinder with greater range. It’s just that the impact is so high that it can kill with better range than those of lower impact. And it comes with rangefinder, making the range even higher than before anywyay.

    • It’s coming very soon

  • NLK3

“Fast sniping, run and gun, quick scope precision shots at close range.” No Land Beyond doe the OPPOSITE of this. Takes just as long to aim, bolt action is NOT fast sniping, and the zoom is still far for close range sniping. I mean, the damage is still the worst of any sniper, and that’s comparing them to unupgraded rares. The exotic perk is WORSE than even Crowd Control, which isn’t even specific to headshots while the exotic perk is only for headshots AND doesn’t remain after the kill for another headshot bonus. I’d say give it half the range, but double the impact to make it require kills with headshot at longer ranges, but make close up shots 1-hit kills, to compensate for the long bolt action (which I want to keep as a new, exclusive exotic weapon animation; don’t let it go to waste).

I just want splitscreen, seeing character inventory before selecting them, measuring the amount of items to store or retrieve, and hopefully customized crucible with friends (randoms would be awesome, too).

And the Necrochasm is horrible because it’s an SMG type weapon (high fire rate, low impact, TERRIBLE stability) that is hard to land headshots with without using a stability perk (which most players have to use, making the other 2 not worth it). Why does it only occur 80% of the time, which seems high, but should be more often like weaopns with other firefly perks? I don’t even think it’s any more powerful than firefly anyway. Either buff the Cursebringer to be 100% or give it higher stability by default, as the new hardest exotic to get to be more worthy of such a title. I got the Mytho 3 times, but only after being able to reach 31 and I may never do Crota’s End on hard until after another level up, and my guy is 32. Sure, my brother did it 10 times, but I just got to him for the first time with my hunter and can’t do it. (GIVE ME GJALLARHORN, DAMMIT!!!)

Also, give the ATS/8 Arachnid precision damage and golden-gun-exclusive third eye. It makes sense, since it has 8 eyes (5 more than third eye anyway) and becomes a sniper when zoomed in for precision kills.

  • NLK3

I want the new modes to be permanent, and to have customized crucible like in other shooters like Halo and COD. I want to play with everybody using infinite heavy ammo and grenades, but no supers. That would be insane and fun. Sick of just 4 modes and one on the weekend. Hell, a survival mode in the PVP maps to see who gets the most point in the game would be cool. Maybe shooting the other team to reduce the amount of time they have to kill the PVE enemies while you take all the kills for yourself, but dying from PVE enemies reduces points, suggesting you must (sometimes) work with your opponents to keep your own points from going down.

    I’m… a… GENIUS!!!

  • The Hellborn

I get a feeling that PvP is more for testing out weapons you got in PvE against stronger enemies that move faster, hit harder, and react and counterattack without hesitation that are unlike the slow, clunky, able-to-casually-walk-up-to-and-punch-to-death enemies you see in PvE, which might explain why the rewards are so below average: because they’re more of a bonus than anything else for finding a weapon that’s really good. That being said, I will admit, yes, there are weapons that are only good in PvP, and yes, I believe the rewards in PvP should be buffed, maybe giving slightly higher chances at better loot for players that do well (*cough* Me, *cough*, no, I’m not a narcissist).

  • Jason Todd

why is the whole QA about PVP? Like wtf mane! I usually play crucible when i have nothing else to do, and i play it my team… at midnight… till 1am. Then off to sleep.

    • The questions were being answered by Crucible/sandbox devs

  • JumboShrimp1837

Will they ever let us skip cut scenes?

    • Buns

Dont be silly, casual scrub, watch the cutscenes like all us other pros who have had to sit through it many many times.

  • ElekTriX

Their Throwing Knife vs Shoulder charge comparison is ridiculous.
“Also, SC is a bonus and is not the Titan’s melee upgrade.”

So your saying the ability to One Hit Kill at melee range with the longest lunge is fine because it isn’t the Titan’s melee ability? All that means is that it doesn’t have a cooldown of 20-60 seconds like a normal melee ability and that you can use it indefinitely granted you sprint for a measly 3 seconds prior.
If that’s the case, where’s my Hunter’s or Warlock’s one hit kill skill-tree ability? And before you say anything to do with Supers, the Titan has one of those as well. (And yes, scorch melee while radiance is active is shit, but it *IS* the Warlock’s Super and everyone else gets a One-Hit Super so it is kinda fair).

If they ARE going to compare it to headshotting with a throwing knife, I don’t see how throwing an arced, slow moving projectile and scoring a critical hit from distance shouldn’t be a One Hit Kill just because it has ‘range’, when a 3 second sprint and a single button press from anywhere within 10 metres away should be rewarded with one.
Me and just about everyone who isn’t a Titan has had a problem with Shoulder charge since the release yet nothing has been done about it, and then they give bullshit responses like this. The reason people don’t enjoy PvP in Destiny and that it’s something that you do when you’ve finished the weekly content, instead of your Go-To game mode is because of the stupid balancing and one hit kill abilities.
If there was somehow a Gametype without radar, Supers, One-Hit-Kill grenades (magnetic, flux, fusion) and the Shoulder Charge, I’d probably play it all day because the gunplay of Destiny is great, but the stupid amount of cheap kills that take no skill to pull off are really frustrating and really lets the PvP down.

There is zero interest in any of the Dark Below exotic weapons. Every single downloadable piece of gear is absolute garbage. We paid for these items, and they are so much junk that no one uses them. Their answer to community feedback is that is is US who just don’t understand. It’s our fault if we think the weapons pack we paid extra for, are complete trash. And “return 4th horseman to it’s former glory?” it never had glory. It’s the worst shotgun in the game. It’s total garbage, No one uses it, no one ever will, once they see how much better almost every legendary shotgun is. This is supposed to be the gold standard of shotgun use. It is suppose to make someone who uses an exotic slot on a shotgun get the overwhelming advantage in shotgun situations. This is a water pistol.
They just don’t get it. I don’t think they ever will, after this article. It’s a weapon pack. There is not one single item in all of dark below which warrants using over an original content piece of gear. So what do they do? Do they buff the garbage useless items they gave us? Nope… They nerf the good gear instead, to make everything into garbage.
